ELKVIEW, W.Va. – The Glenville State Football team fell to Emory & Henry, 45-17, earlier this afternoon in the Pioneers first game of the 2025 campaign. The Wasps ran for 296 yards on 43 attempts and forced two interceptions, spoiling GSU's first
Home Away From Home game at Herbert Hoover Stadium.
1st Quarter
The new-look Pioneer defense looked strong early, holding E&H to a three-and-out and giving the Pioneer offense good field position. Senior quarterback
Anthony Garrett connected on his first pass of the season to
Zavione Wood for 14 yards, however the drive quickly stalled and GSU was forced to punt the ball right back. The Wasps put together a four-and-a-half-minute drive on the ensuing possession, capping it off with a three-yard TD run by quarterback Charles Mutter III.
After Emory & Henry's defense got off the field in just over a minute, star running back Jordan Jackson went 67 yards to extend the lead to 14-0, giving E&H a two-score lead heading into the second quarter.
2nd Quarter
Within a minute of the new quarter, the Wasps pushed their advantage to 17 on a 34-yard field goal from Trace Butcher. GSU answered quickly as
Anthony Garrett found
Amari Colon-Brown for 55 yards down the middle before lobbing it to
Jeremiah King from 17 yards out for a score. On the following drive, the Wasps were able to score on a 4
th and 4 conversion from the 32-yard-line, making it 24-7. A 75-yard touchdown pass from
Anthony Garrett to
Tariq Miller would be negated due to offsetting penalties, eventually leading to a Pioneer punt.
A few possessions later, Glenville State put it back to a two-score game on a
Brody Layman 30-yard field goal before the half ended. Emory & Henry tried to put points on the board before the break, but would be unsuccessful as they carried a 24-10 lead into the locker room.
3rd Quarter
Mike Kellar's offense came out on fire in the second half, meshing together a three minute, 80-yard drive that was finished off with a 36-yard touchdown connection between
Anthony Garrett and
Tariq Miller, trimming the E&H lead to seven. From there, the Wasps were once again held by the GSU defense, but a stop of their own set up a scoop and score on a blocked punt by the Emory & Henry special teams to boost their lead back to 14 points.
4th Quarter
A forced turnover by E&H put the Pioneers in an even tougher position and the Wasps took full advantage, draining over five minutes of the clock before Charles Mutter III found the endzone on the ground to put the game out of reach. A passing touchdown with 16 seconds to go in the game put the finishing touches on Emory & Henry's season-opening defeat of the Pioneers, 45-17.
