Pinkney Pours in 31, Lady Pioneers Handle Frostburg State at Home

GLENVILLE, W.Va – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer Basketball team got 31 points from senior Carine Pinkney as she carried the Lady Pioneers to a runaway victory over Frostburg State at home, 109-84. GSU completed the season sweep of the Bobcats and improved to (15-3) overall and (10-2) in league play.

1st Half
Khalia Bryant started off the scoring for the home team with a good three-pointer, and another shot from deep connected for Nylah Davis to add to the lead. FSU took the lead late in the quarter with a three of their own, however the Lady Pioneers closed the first with a ten-to-zero run to regain the advantage after one. In the second period, Glenville State took control of the game with great defense, only allowing 11 points in ten minutes. Scores from Nwando Okigbo, Niko Kaufmann, and Payton James extended the GSU lead to 26 at the break.

2nd Half
In the third quarter, the teams were trading baskets as Keanti Thompson had five in the quarter, and Wonder Nkoyock connected on two layups to push the lead even further to 29 after 30 minutes of play. In the fourth, the Lady Pioneers salted the game away with a 26-point attack as Nylah Davis had four points down the stretch and Jayda Allie knocked down two free throws, as Glenville State would win their third in a row, 109-84, and regain the top spot in the MEC.

Frostburg State
Julie Spinelli led the team with 28 points on 3-5 from beyond the arc, and had six rebounds, while Sophie Nichols had 24 points shooting 50% from the floor and had four rebounds. The Bobcats had one other double-figure scorer as Ayla Hileman had 11 points and three steals on the night.

Glenville State
Carine Pinkney had a season-high 31 points on 13-17 from the field, and 4-5 from three-point range while also collecting six rebounds. Nwando Okigbo added 18 points and eight rebounds, Khalia Bryant and Payton James both had 13 points, and Wonder Nkoyock scored 11. Kenati Thompson and Nylah Davis both had eight points each, and Niko Kaufmann chipped in five points in ten minutes of play.

Up Next For The Pioneers
GSU will take on Fairmont State on Saturday (Jan. 31) in a pivotal conference game. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. inside Joe Retton Arena.
