ATHENS, W.Va. – The Glenville State Football team had their fourth quarter comeback fall just short in Athens earlier today (Oct. 17), as the Pioneers fell to Concord, 34-31. The Pioneers pieced together nearly 400 yards of total offense while the Mountain Lions amounted 519 yards offensively.
1st Quarter
Concord used a pair of late down conversions and a 21-yard completion to move down the field on the opening drive, but a strong defensive stand inside the redzone held CU to just three points. The Pioneer offense quickly took the lead, with
JD Sherrod finding
Triston Walker for a 49-yard touchdown connection, making it 7-3. On Concord's following drive, the Mountain Lions were able to drain nearly six minutes off the clock and regain the lead on a three-yard touchdown run from Texas State transfer Greg Burrell.
2nd Quarter
After pushing the ball down the field to end the opening quarter, Glenville State had to settle for a field goal to knot things up at 10. It didn't take the Mountain Lions long to answer back, scoring in just 47 seconds on a 51-yard rush and 20-yard rush from Curtis Clark. CU shut the Pioneer offense down for the first time of the day, and extended their advantage to 10 on a 23-yard field goal. Concord would eventually take a 20-10 lead into the locker room.
3rd Quarter
The Pioneers used a 41-yard field goal from
Brody Layman to trim the deficit down to seven to open the second half before the Pioneers once again used a Layman field goal to get closer to the Mountain Lions. After
Bryson Oliver picked off Devin Kargman for just his fourth INT of the season, Layman connected from 36 yards out to make it 20-16. CU then created separation with 43 seconds left in the quarter on a third down touchdown pass from Kargman to Dom Collins.
4th Quarter
Down 11, GSU immediately answered back with a third down TD of their own as Sherrod found
Kashez Gedeon from eight yards out. The Pioneers converted on the two-point conversion, climbing closer to the Mountain Lions, 27-24. Concord quickly went up double digits with back-to-back plays to Burrell that ended in a Concord touchdown.
With under five minutes remaining, Sherrod led a three-minute and eight-second drive to make it 34-31 after connecting with
Kyree Bunny from 16 yards out. On Concord's next drive, the Pioneers stuffed CU on a 4
th and 1 attempt from their own 44-yard line to put the ball back in the Pioneers' hands. In what looked to be a promising drive, would end in heartbreak after a fierce rush by the CU pass rush forced an interception to seal the win for the Mountain Lions, 34-31.
