GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Top-ranked Glenville State Wrestling will have a busy weekend upcoming, as the Pioneers will take a group of grapplers to North Carolina for the Pembroke Open on Saturday (Nov. 7) before taking on the University of Virginia aboard the USS Yorktown CV-10 on Sunday (Nov. 8).
Glenville State most recently competed in the Pioneer Open presented by GoMart to start the 2026-27 campaign, taking down 15 teams to win it, including four nationally ranked opponents. Eight Pioneers placed, including first-place finishers
Cooper Shore (133) and
Shawn Taylor (174).
Seventh-year head coach
Dylan Cottrell plans to send a group of 20-25 Pioneers to the Pembroke Open as he pieces together a 10-man lineup for GSU's first dual of the new season. Glenville State has a tall task at hand on Sunday with the Cavaliers, as Virginia currently rosters seven wrestlers who have previously qualified for the NCAA Championships and four Top 250 recruits.
As Coach Cottrell noted in this week's
GoMart Pioneer Coaches Show, there is a possibility that the Pioneers take on Virginia on Saturday at 5 p.m., but the match is currently slated to take place on Sunday at 10 a.m. Stay up to date on gstatepioneers.com for any date or timing changes to the dual.
