WHEELING, W.Va. – The fifth-seeded Glenville State Men's Basketball team fell in a chaotic double overtime MEC Tournament Semifinal to West Liberty Saturday (Mar. 7) night inside WesBanco Arena, 105-100, as the Pioneers succumbed to five players being fouled out, including All-MEC First Team selection
Jalen Knott and Second Team honoree
Elijah Redfern. GSU finished the season (18-12) overall, which is the most wins since the 2014-15 season.
1st Half
The two teams traded baskets early and often, with neither squad able to gain a substantial lead the semifinal matchup being even at 14 all during the under-10 minute media timeout. A 10-2 run by the Hilltoppers created the first separation of the night, but just a few minutes later the Pioneers were able to trim into the deficit down to two on consecutive buckets by
Jalen Knott and
Prince Mosengo. GSU eventually tied it, however, WLU closed the half on a 5-0 run to make it 38-33.
2nd Half
West Liberty tried to grow the lead but the deep threat of Knott and inside presence of Mosengo kept Glenville State close.
Elijah Redfern was able to get downhill and draw contact, using free throws and mid-range jumpers to stay involved offensively. Knott caught fire at the 10-minute mark of the half, drilling back-to-back threes to give GSU a 59-57 lead.
After West Liberty used layups from Landon Butler and Myles Montgomery to keep the contest a two-point game, the Pioneers answered back with consecutive three-pointers by sharpshooter
Corey Boulden to grow the blue and white's lead to eight, 72-64, with just under five minutes remaining. Free throws by Mosengo extended the advantage to nine, however, West Liberty capitalized on their free throw opportunities down the stretch and a pair of crucial turnovers to cut their deficit to just three. Montgomery then drained a three, and both teams missed their looks to win the game to send the game to overtime.
Overtimes
The foul barrage began 11 seconds into the overtime, with Redfern giving GSU the lead early in OT on free throws. Knott then fouled out, but Boulden's hot shooting from behind the arc kept Glenville State in the lead. West Liberty's first overtime lead grew to five with just 13 seconds left, but Redfern drained a three and WLU went 1-for-2 at the line, which led to Boulden draining a corner three to extend it to a second overtime.
The Hilltoppers were able to score seven of their 11 2OT points from the free throw line as the Pioneers saw their fifth player foul out in the extended period. After emptying nearly the whole bench,
Bob Bolen's squad continued to stay in it until the end as WLU escaped with the 105-100 double overtime victory.
