Dylan Cottrell

Dylan Cottrell enters his sixth season as Head Coach of the Glenville State Wrestling program in 2025-26.

Under Cottrell, the Pioneers reached new heights once again in 2024-25. GSU captured their second-straight MEC Championship, first-ever NCAA DII Super Region 3 Championship, six individual MEC Champions, two individual Super Region 3 Champions in Hayden Pummel and Nick Johnson, seven National Qualifiers, program-high four All-Americans and a national ranking as high as No. 2 in the NWCA Team Rankings. The Pioneers also went (19-6) overall, winning their first dual over a Division I program when they defeated Morgan State, 27-12, on November 10. In addition to their success on the mat, the Pioneers had nine wrestlers earn NWCA Scholar All-American status. Cottrell was also once again the MEC Coach of the Year, his third-consecutive time. 

During the 2023-24 season, the Pioneers won their first Mountain East title and the first for coach Cottrell. Cottrell was also named coach of the year in the league for the second straight season. Cottrell guided Gavin Quiocho to a national runner up finish in the 133 pound weight class. Cottrell also guided another All-American in Gaetano Leonardis at 157 pounds. The Pioneers had a total of five national qualifiers in 2023-24. 
 
In the 2022-23 season, Glenville continued to have success placing second at the Mountain East Conference Championships, three individual regional champions, and five qualifiers for nationals. With the success of the 2022-23 campaign Cottrell was named the MEC Coach of the Year. Gavin Quiocho, moving to the 133-weight class, saw tremendous success posting a (38-5) record. Quicoho would be a national champion in the 133-weight class and was the conference’s Wrestler of the Year.  The Pioneers also had their first two All-Americans with Gavin and Jared Campbell.  
 
The 2021-22 campaign set multiple firsts for Coach Cottrell’s Pioneers as they went (16-7). Glenville, during the Carolina Clash, was able to pick up the young program’s first win over a ranked opponent defeating the #12 UNC Pembroke Braves. The Pioneers had their highest finish at the Mountain East Conference Championship, placing second. GSU also had national success by sending Hunter Delong and Cole Houser to the NCAA Nationals. 
 
In, 2021 his first season, GSC went 0-5 and placed 6th overall at the MEC Championship. They also had several wrestlers make it to NCAA DII Super Regional III and they finished 9th overall. 
  
Cottrell comes to GSU after serving as an assistant coach at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island from 2017 - 2018. He also served as head coach of the Brown Wrestling Club. 
  
He was the first Big 12 Champion at West Virginia University in wrestling, an Academic All-Big 12 team member in 2016 - 17, a two-time Dean's List honoree, a two-time wrestling team captain, and a three-time NCAA qualifier. 
  
Cottrell graduated from WVU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications Studies and is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Healthcare Administration from Marshall University. While earning his Masters, Cottrell has served as a coach for Cabell Midland High School.Â
