Pioneers Pickup Second Straight Win, Defeats Hilltoppers of West Liberty

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team went on the road and defeated the Hilltoppers of West Liberty, 17-13 on  their Homecoming as they claimed their second straight win and third of the season.

Glenville State (3-4, 2-4) had just 315 total yards of offense on 68 total plays with 183 of it coming in the air while West Liberty (2-5, 2-5) ran 75 plays and racked up 337 total yards.

On the Pioneers first possession GSC drove down to the Hilltoppers 24 yard line and would face a fourth and two but would come up short on the fourth down conversion as they turned the ball over to West Liberty at the 11:34 minute mark of the first quarter.

West Liberty's first possession of the game would end up as a turnover as Lukas O'Connor pass was intercepted by Andre Dalton as they Pioneers took over at their own 20 yard line with 8:36 in quarter one.

Neither team would get points in the first as we headed into the second quarter scoreless.

GSC's Jaylen McNair would end that tie at the 10:17 minute mark of the second as he hit Kentre' Grier, his first touchdown catch of the season, from three yards out as the Pioneers went up 7-0 after the PAT was good.

West Liberty later tied the game up at 7-7 with just 39 seconds left till halftime as Brent Colabella connected with Ian Kelly for a one yard touchdown pass. However, before halftime GSC would get points on the board and break that tie. The Pioneers drove down to the West Liberty's 27 yard line as Kelvin Flores connected on a 44 yard field goal as GSC took a 10-7 lead into the break.

West Liberty would get the ball first in the second half of action but GSC's Tristin Freeman would intercept Brent Colabella pass, his second interception in two games and third on the season, as the Pioneers took over with 13:15 on the clock.

However, the Pioneers were unable to convert that turnover into points as they gave the ball right back to the Hilltoppers at the 11:40 minute mark of the third. West Liberty then tied it up again for a second time at 10-10 at the 7:45 minute mark of the third on a 42 yard Chris Morris field goal. After three quarters of play the Pioneer and Hilltoppers headed into the fourth tied at 10-10.

The Hilltoppers added another field goal, this one from 24 yards out, at the 14:56 minute mark of the fourth as they took their first lead of the game 13-10.

The Pioneers would take the lead back for good at the 7:24 minute mark, which also proved to be the game winning touchdown, as Jaylen McNair hit Javon Butler for a 37 yard touchdown pass as GSC led 17-13.

The Pioneer defense allowed just 84 rushing yards for the Hilltoppers while GSC ran for 132 yards on the afternoon. Glenville State won the turnover battle as they forced two interceptions. However GSC was just 3-of-14 on third-down conversion on the day while West Liberty was 9-of-17.

GSC's signal caller Jaylen McNair passed for 183 yards as he went 19-for-31 with two touchdowns. Kentre' Grier was his favorite target hauling in six passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. Fellow wide receiver Javon Butler caught five passes for 63 yards and the go ahead touchdown.

Thomas Boles III led the rushing attack for the Pioneers as he carried the ball nine times for 65 yards while Dominique Gibson rushed for 50 yards on 13 carriers.

The Pioneer defense was led by Earon Settles as he finished with 12 total tackles while Andre Dalton racked up nine tackles and an interception.

Jeremiah Ortiz rushed for 72 yards for the Hilltoppers while Brent Colabella passed for 158 yards going 18-of-30 with a touchdown. Defensively for West Liberty, Clifford Clark led the team with 12 tackles on the day.

Glenville State (3-4, 2-4) will return home to Morris Stadium this Saturday, October 21st as they host the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State University for Homecoming in the Annual Battle for the Bit.
