Offensive Outburst Lifts Pioneers Past Mountain Lions

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team picked up their second win of the season and their first conference victory of the year at home on Saturday, 48-28.
 
Glenville State (2-4, 1-4) had an explosive day as they racked up 574 total yards on 78 plays while Concord (1-5, 1-5) gained 301 on the day on 69 plays.
 
The Pioneers were able to score two quick touchdowns in the first quarter. Jaylen McNair was able to find DJ Williams for a 22-yard touchdown. Then the Pioneer defense forced a punt by the Mountain Lions and on the first play from scrimmage, Austin Ratliff took a wildcat snap 94 yards for another Pioneer touchdown as gave GSC held a 14-0 lead.
 
However, Concord would strike right back behind a six-yard touchdown pass from Adam Fulton to Brandon Plyler, this cut the lead to 14-7.  The first quarter scoring would close out behind a Kelvin Flores 33-yard line field goal. Heading into the second quarter, GSC would hold a 17-7 lead.
 
Dominique Gibson would start the second quarter scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run giving GSC a 24-7 lead with 13:13 to play till halftime. The Pioneers then struck again at the 8:10 minute mark behind a 24-yard Flores Field Goal to move the score to 27-7.
 
Glenville State found pay-dirt again behind Jaylen McNair one yard touchdown rush to give the Pioneers a 34-7 lead at halftime.
 
To start the second half, Concord would drive down the field and move the score to 34-14 with 11:30 to go as Adam Fulton hit Camari Murray from 11 yards out. However GSC answered back behind a McNair to Williams five yard touchdown reception pushing the Pioneer lead to 41-14 with 8:05 to play.
 
Concord was able to bring the score to 41-21 before the end of the third quarter.
 
Quintavius Twine would intercept a Concord pass and returned it for a touchdown, but it would be called back. Following the penalty, McNair found Ratliff in the endzone for another TD, moving the lead to 48-21. Concord would score the final points of the game with 3:29 to go in the game behind a seven-yard touchdown pass.
 
Again the Pioneers offense was in full swing as they racked up 574 total yards with 269 passing yards and 305 on the ground. Both teams were perfect in the red-zone as GSC went 5-of-5 and Concord finished the day 4-of-4.
 
The penalties again plagued the Pioneers as they were flagged 15 times for 157 yards while Concord was flagged three times for 14 yards.
 
Quarterback Jaylen McNair threw for 223 yards as he went 18-for-29 with three touchdowns and an interception. Austin Ratliff was McNair's favorite target as he caught five passes for 39 yards and a score. Ratliff, also had a big day on ground as he rushed for 162 yards on 12 carries and a rushing touchdown.
 
DJ Williams also had a nice day as he caught four passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Dominique Gibson carried the ball 15 times for 73 yards and a score.
 
The Pioneer defense forced five takeaways on the day. Cory Roberts led GSC with seven tackles on the day with two tackles-for-loss and a sack while Earon Settles finished with five tackles, a fumble recovery, and a pass breakup.
 
Concord's Adam Fulton passed for 154 yards as he went 13-for-32 with three touchdowns but had four costly interceptions. Brandon Plyler caught four passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Jamal Petty led the ground attack with 72 yards on 13 carries.
 
Defensively, the Mountain Lions were led by Zach Malone as he finished with nine tackles.
 
Glenville State (2-4, 1-4) will hit the road next Saturday, October 14th as they travel to West Liberty University to take on the Hilltoppers.
