Pioneers Fall at Shepherd

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers went on the road Saturday and dropped their seventh straight game to Shepherd University, 85-68.

Glenville State (0-7, 0-4) scored 37 second half points while Shepherd (3-4, 2-2) scored 53 points as the Pioneers fell to the Rams by 17 points.

Shepherd got off to a fast start as they went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-0 lead at the 16:01 minute mark of the first half. However the Pioneers responded with a 9-2 run as they tied the game up at 9-9 with 12:32 to play till halftime time.

Neither team could make much separation in the first half but the Rams held a four point lead 32-28 with just 1:01 to play but John Routzahn would hit a big three-pointer to end the half as GSC pulled within one point, 32-31.    

Shepherd started the second half on a 14-9 run as they took a six point lead over GSC, 46-40 at the first media timeout with 14:36 on the clock. GSC would keep it close as the Rams held a five point lead, 55-50 with 8:14 to play.

However Shepherd then took a 10 point lead at 63-53 with 6:13 left as the Rams went on an 8-3 run.

Glenville State tried to cut into the Rams lead but Shepherd outscored the Pioneers 12-5 in the last 3:00 minutes as GSC fell, 85-68.

Both teams shot the ball well as GSC finished the game shooting 41 percent from the floor and 34 percent from deep while the Rams shot 43 percent from the field and 36 percent from deep.

The Rams won the rebounding battled as they out rebounded the Pioneers 42 to 27.

Glenville State's bench outscored Shepherd's bench by two points at 26-24 however the Rams scored 15 second-chance points while the Pioneers scored just five.

Brooks Ely scored a game high 20 point to lead GSC while also grabbing five rebounds. John Routzahn scored 13 points off the bench as he went 3-of-5 from deep.

Darhius Nunn and Jon Dunmyer each chipped in with 10 points each.

Shepherd had two players score 17 points in AJ Carr and Steffen Davis. Carr also grabbed a game high 17 rebounds as he finished with a double-double.

Glenville State (0-7, 0-4) will travel to Concord University this Tuesday, December 5th for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off with the Mountain Lions.
