Chastain’s Three-Pointer Lifts Pioneers Past Tigers

Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State's Dwayne Chastain Jr. drilled a deep three-pointer with just four seconds left as he helped lift the Pioneers past the Salem Tigers 76-75.

Glenville State (1-10) had 11 of their 12 players score in the win while Salem (4-9) had four players score in double figures.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead however the Tigers scored the next five straight points as they took their first lead of the game at 5-4 with 15:41 on the clock.

Glenville State then went on an 8-0 run as they took a 12-5 lead with under 15:00 to play until halftime. Again Salem answered as they went on their own run, 11-3, as they held a one point lead at the 11:1o minute mark at 16-15.

Neither team could really make any separation the rest of the half but GSC took a one point lead at intermission 37-36. The first half saw just one tie and six lead changes.

The Pioneers shot 36 percent from the field in the first half and 33 percent from deep while Salem shot 30 percent from the floor and 30 percent from behind the three-point line.

In the second half, both teams went back and forth with neither team holding a larger lead than five points. GSC however took a five point lead at 65-60 with 5:57 to play.

However Salem wouldn't back down as they took a four point lead, 75-71, with just 19 second left after a three-point player by the Tigers.

Glenville State cut the lead back to two points 75-73 on a Darhius Nunn layup with just 13 second left. GSC then forced the Tigers into a turnover on the next possession as Dwayne Chastain Jr. drilled a three to secure the 76-75 victory for the Pioneers.

The second half of action saw six lead changes and seven ties. Glenville State's defense forced Salem into 16 turnovers and scored 21 points off of them. The Pioneers outscored the Tigers in the paint 34 to 32.

Glenville State finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep while Salem shot 38 percent from the floor and 27 percent from deep.

Darhius Nunn led the Pioneers with 17 points and five assists. Nuun was also the only Pioneer in double figures. Brooks Ely scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.

John Routzahn, Dwayne Chastain Jr., and JR Kerr each had eight points in the contest.

Salem was led by Malik Toppin as he scored a game high 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds on his way to a double-double. Reggie Oliver scored 14 points while Jarius Farrow scored 11 and Darren Montgomery rounded out the scoring with 10 points.

Glenville State (1-10) will host Notre Dame College this Thursday, January 4th at 7:30 p.m. from the Waco Center.
