Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team went on the road and claimed their first victory of the 2017 season in a wild win over the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers, 47-42 in the I-79 Barrel Classic.
Glenville State (1-3, 0-3) racked up 410 total yards in the contest behind freshman quarterback
Jaylen McNair while allowing Alderson Broaddus (1-3) to gain 354 yards.
To start the scoring, Jamil Collison-Cofie punched in two first-quarter touchdowns for the Battlers to give Alderson Broaddus a 14-0 lead. GSC was able to score on a flea-flicker touchdown pass from
Jaylen McNair to
DJ Williams from 48 yards out. The Pioneers trailed the Battlers after one quarter of action, 14-7.
Glenville State would then tie the game up early in the second quarter at 14-14 as
Trevon Smith scored his first career touchdown as a Pioneer from five yards out. However Alderson Broaddus would answer back with a seven yard touchdown run by Jamil Collison-Cofie. The PAT attempt would be fumbled but the Battlers would recover and throw it in for two points as they led 22-14.
Glenville State however would match that touchdown making it 22-21 as McNair hit
DJ Williams, his second TD catch of the game, from eight yards with 8:35 left till halftime.
But there was more scoring to come as the Battlers scored on a nine yard run from Darius Hagans as they took a 29-21 lead. Again the Pioneers would match that score as
Dominique Gibson ran it in from two yards out as GSC pulled within one point, 29-28. Glenville State then took the lead right before halftime as
Javon Butler hauled in his sixth receiving touchdown of the season from McNair from 22 yards out to give the Pioneers a 34-29 (Failed 2 pt. attempt) lead at the half.
Much of the third quarter would pass without any scores until McNair found
DJ Williams for their third hookup of the day as it moved the Pioneers lead to 41-29 with 51 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth, GSC's
Dominique Gibson started the quarter with his second score of the game to move the Pioneers lead to 47-29 from 11 yards out. GSC's defense would then get the ball back for the Pioneer offense however the Battlers would recover a Pioneer fumble in the endzone for a touchdown making it 47-36.
Alderson Broaddus was able to put another score on the board on a 13-yard touchdown pass, moving the score to 47-42. Then after GSC was forced to put and a bad snap it would give the Battlers one last attempt to win. After moving the ball into GSC territory it would come down to a fourth and 10, but GSC's
Lamar Daniel came up with a huge sack to seal the win for the Pioneers. The win is also the first career victory for GSC's head man
Eric Smith.
Both teams racked up the penalties as GSC was flagged 13 times for 101 yards while the Battlers were flagged 10 times for 54 yards. Glenville State went 6-of-13 on third downs while Alderson Broaddus was 6-of-18 on the day.
Freshman quarterback
Jaylen McNair picked up his first career victory on the same day he got his first career road start. McNair, went 17-of-28 for 243 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.
DJ Williams was his favorite target as he hauled in six passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns.
Dominique Gibson led the ground attack as he carried the ball 26 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns while
Trevon Smith totted it nine times for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Earon Settled led the Pioneer defense with 11 total tackles while
Cory Roberts finished with nine tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss.
Lamar Daniel had two big sacks on the day.
Jamil Collison-Cofie carried the ball 22 times for the Battlers for 91 yards and three touchdowns. Alderson Broaddus QB Connor McWilliams went 20-for-22 for 247 yards and a touchdown. Alderson Broaddus's defense was led by Quade Raley as he finished with nine total tackles.
Glenville State (1-3, 0-3) will hit the road again next Saturday, September 30
th as they travel to West Virginia State University for a matchup with the Yellow Jackets.
