Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers came up just short on the road Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston by six points 85-79.
Glenville State (2-13, 1-9)shot  49 percent from the field and 60 percent from deep, a season best, while Charleston (9-7, 5-5) shot 55 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the arc.
In the first half Charleston would take an early five point lead over GSC at the 16:36 minute mark 10-5. However the Pioneers then went on a small 7-2 run as they knotted the game up at 12-12 with 14:58 to play.
The Golden Eagles responded to the Pioneers run with an 8-0 run of their own as they led 20-12 with under 13 minutes to play. But again GSC answered going on a 16-8 run and tying the game up, the second tie of the first half, this time at 28 all with 6:46 to play till intermission.
The Golden Eagles would end up with a slight advantage at halftime leading the Pioneers by two points 41-39.
Glenville State shot 46 percent from the field in the first while UC shot 52 percent however the Pioneers shot 66 percent from deep with the Golden Eagles shooting 50 percent from deep.
In the second half of action neither team could make much separation but the Golden Eagles had a five point advantage after the first media timeout at 52-47. GSC made a run and cut UC's lead to one point at 59-58 at the 8:20 minute mark.
The Pioneers would keep it close until the 5:18 minute mark when the Golden Eagles scored six straight points as they went up by seven points 72-65. GSC would cut it to four points, 78-74, with 1:22 to play but UC would hit its free-throws down the stretch as they held on for the victory over the Pioneers.
Glenville State's defense forced the University of Charleston into 21 turnovers and scored 14 points off of them while GSC gave it away 14 times in the game.
The Pioneers bench outscored the Golden Eagles bench 28-17 in the matchup.
Jon Dunmyer led the Pioneers with 18 points while
Dwayne Chastain Jr. scored 13 points.
Darhius Nunn chipped in with 10 points while
Elisha Mayberry scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
Charleston had four player score in double figures with Kier Anderson scoring a game high 22 points and had eight rebounds. Lamont McManus chipped in with 19 points while Seth O'Neal scored 13 points and Austin Howard chipped in with 10 points.
Glenville State (2-13, 1-9) will hit the road next Wednesday, January 17
th when they travel to Fairmont, W.Va. for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State University.
