Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers snapped a four game losing streak on Saturday as they picked up a six point win over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan 71-65.
Glenville State (3-14, 2-10) shot 55 percent from the field while West Virginia Wesleyan (2-16, 2-10) shot 50 percent from the floor.
The Pioneers jumped out to a seven point lead at the 14:02 minute mark of the first half as they led 13-6 over the Bobcats. However WVWC then went on a 7-0 run as they tied the game up at 13 all with 11:09 to play till halftime.
But GSC weathered the run and took an eight point lead, their largest of the first half, over the Bobcats at 32-24 with 3:14 on the clock. The Pioneers headed into the break leading by six, 39-33.
The first half saw four lead changes and two ties.
In the second half, the Bobcats started on an 11-5 run as they tied the game up at 44 all at the 15:11 minute mark. West Virginia Wesleyan then scored the next seven points as they went up by seven, 51-44 with under 12 minutes to play.
The Pioneers would battle back and take a one point lead with 3:11 to play at 62-62. However the Bobcats retook the lead on the next possession, 63-62, as they nailed two free-throws.
Glenville State then ended the game on a 9-2 run lead by
Brooks Ely as they claimed the six point victory.
The Pioneers won the rebounding battle by one, 25-24, while also outscoring the Bobcats in the paint 34-22. WVWC had the advantage in second-chance points as they scored 12 while GSC had just four.
Glenville State was led by
Darhius Nunn's game high 21 points.
Brooks Ely chipped in 15 points while
Jon Dunmyer chipped in with 14 points. Thoe Brown grabbed a game high nine rebounds to go with five points.
West Virginia Wesleyan had three players score in double figures with Fred Brondsted leading the way with 17 points going 5-of-13 from deep. Dusan Vicentic had 12 points while Kam Cooper chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
Glenville State (3-14, 2-10) will host the Concord University at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday, January 24.
