Glenville, W.Va. – The No. 13/11 Glenville State College Lady Pioneers picked up their 17
th straight victory, 22
nd straight at home, against the Concord University Wednesday night inside the Waco Center outlasting the Mountain Lions 96-85.
Glenville State (18-1, 13-0) forced Concord (9-8, 6-7) into 30 turnovers and scored 31 points off of them in the victory.
The Lady Pioneers began the first half on a 4-0 run with two consecutive buckets from the game's leading scorer,
Paris McLeod. However, the Mountains Lions created an 8-0 run to lead 8-4 with 7:15 to go in the first quarter.
A timely steal from
Tayana Stewart and two-point conversion, setup GSC on a 17-7 run. The Lady Pioneers held the Mountain Lions to zero offensive rebounds in the quarter and finished with a six point lead after one, 23-17.
The second quarter began with the two teams trading buckets, keeping the score within single digits for majority of the quarter. A last second layup from
Janele Price at the end of the half would put the Lady Pioneers up eleven, 39-50 at the break.
GSC registered the first points of the third quarter, putting the Lady Pioneers up 52-39. The game was back and forth but GSC held a 14 point lead, 63-49. A layup with three seconds left from
Erika Toney, put the GSC up 15 ending the third quarter, 69-54.
Concord would outscore the Lady Pioneers in the fourth quarter 31-27 however GSC proved to be to much as they held on for the 11 point win.
The Lady Pioneers shot 37 percent from the field while the Mountain Lions shot 52 percent from the field. GSC shot just 20 percent from deep while Concord shot 42 percent. GSC's defense again forced the Mountain Lions into 30 turnovers and came away with 21 steals. The Lady Pioneers finished with 21 second-chance points while Concord had 10.
Paris McLeod led all scorers with 22 points, six assists, seven rebounds, and had a season high nine steals.
Courtney Davis registered 13 points and seven rebounds while
Erika Toney grabbed eight boards and scored 12 points.
Abby Stoller chipped in to finish with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Concord was led by Glenville native Riley Fitzwater as she posted a double-double scoring 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Madison May chipped in with 19 points and Danielle Catron scored 17 points in the loss.
Glenville State (18-1, 13-0) will hit the road this weekend as they travel to UVa-Wise for a matchup with the Cavaliers on Saturday, January 27
th.
