Glenville, W.Va. – The No. 13/11 GSC Lady Pioneer basketball team went on the road Saturday and claimed their 18
th straight win and stayed perfect in MEC play as they defeated the UVa-Wise Cavaliers, 109-68.
Glenville State (19-1, 14-0) scored over 100 points for the eighth time this season and held UVa-Wise (3-16, 2-12) to just 68 points in the game.
The Lady Pioneers started the contest by scoring the game's first 14 points while UVa-Wise would struggle to find a basket. The Cavaliers finally got a basket at the 6:34 minute mark of the first quarter as GSC led 14-2. Glenville State then stretched their lead to 17 points at the 3:54 minute mark at 21-4.
Glenville State would take a 28-12 lead at the end of the first quarter led by
Paris McLeod's seven points.
In the second quarter, the Lady Pioneers outscored the Cavaliers 30-17 as they took a commanding 28 point lead, 58-29 at halftime.
Paris McLeod was a big factor in the first half for GSC as she scored 17 points going 7-of-14 from the field at the break.
Glenville State shot 41 percent from the field in the first half and 29 percent from behind the arc while UVa-Wise shot a little better at 44 percent but shot just 16 percent from deep.
Glenville State would start the third with a three-pointer from
Courtney Davis as they held a 61-31 lead over the Cavaliers. UVa-Wise then went on a 10-9 run but trailed GSC by 28, 67-39 with 4:51 on the clock. The Lady Pioneers eventually outscored the Cavaliers 22-15 in the third as they took an 80-44 lead into the fourth.
The Lady Pioneers would win the fourth quarter outscoring the Cavaliers 29-24 as they went on to claim a 41 point victory, 109-68.
Glenville State never trailed in the contest and their largest lead of the game was 50 points. GSC finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field and 39 percent from deep while UVa-Wise shot 39 percent from the floor and 23 percent form deep.
The Lady Pioneers forced the Cavaliers into 31 turnovers while coming away with 14 steals and scored 39 points off of those turnovers.
Glenville State had five players in double figures with
Paris McLeod scoring a game-high 24 points as she went 9-of-17 from the field.
Julie Bishop scored 15 points in the victory going 5-of-10 from deep.
Courtney Davis posted a double-double with 14 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Bhrea Griffin also posted a double-double for GSC as she scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists. Griffin also came away with six steals.
Asiya Smith chipped in with 13 points.
UVa-Wise was led by Cynita Webb as she posted a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds while Hanna Oliver chipped in with 11 points.
Glenville State (19-1, 14-0) will return to action on Thursday, February 1
st as they travel to West Virginia State University for a 5:30 p.m. match-up with the Yellow Jackets.
