Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer men's basketball team surrendered a 25 point lead as they fell on the road Saturday in overtime to the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise, 89-87.
Glenville State (3-16, 2-12) shot 47 percent from the field and 45 percent from deep while UVa-Wise (8-12, 6-8) shot 42 percent from the field but just 28 percent from deep as they came from behind to pick up the victory over the Pioneers.
UVa-Wise would take an early 2-0 lead over GSC however the Pioneers would tie it up at 2-2 as
Theo Brown hit two free-throws. After that tie GSC then hit five straight three-pointers, led by
Elisha Mayberry as he drilled three of them, as the Pioneers went on a 15-8 run as they took a seven point lead at 17-10 with 13:26 on the clock.
Glenville State later extended their lead to 14 points, 31-17, as they went on a 14-7 run this time with 7:48 to play till halftime. The Pioneers then outscored the Cavaliers 7-1 in the last four minutes of the half as they held a 23 point lead at intermission, 46-23.
GSC shot well in the first half as they finished shooting 53 percent from the field and 52 percent from deep while UVa-Wise shot 30 percent from the floor and just 13 percent from deep.
In the second half, the Cavaliers went on a 11-5 run as they cut the Pioneers lead to 17, 51-34, with 16:02 to play. UVa-Wise then went on a another run this time outscoring GSC 26-12 as they cut the lead to just five, 65-60, with 7:59 left in the game.
The Cavaliers then tied the game up at 74-74 as they went on a 14-9 run with 1:53 to play. Both teams would get a much need bucket as we headed into overtime tied up at 76-76.
In overtime GSC would take a two point lead at the 1:46 minute mark at 86-84 however a big three-pointer by UVa-Wise on their next possession would put the Cavaliers up for good as they held on to complete the comeback victory defeating the Pioneers by two, 89-87. Â
Glenville State scored 13 second-chance points while UVa-Wise had 10. The Cavaliers won the rebounding battle by one, 41-40. The Pioneer also got outscored in the paint 40-32.
The Pioneers had two players in double figures with
Jon Dunmyer leading the way with 22 points as he went 9-of-17 from the field to go along with eight rebounds. Freshman
Elisha Mayberry scored 20 points while
Darhius Nunn scored just four points but dished out 10 assists.
UVa-Wise was led by Michal Seals as he scored a game-high 38 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists. Taiwo Badmus chipped in with 27 points and nine rebounds.
Glenville State (3-16, 2-12) will return to action this Thursday, February 1
st when they travel to West Virginia State for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off with the Yellow Jackets.
