Pioneers Upset Yellow Jackets on the Road

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer men's basketball team went on the road Thursday evening and knocked off the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets by 13, 92-79.

Glenville State (4-16, 3-12) had a great night shooting the basketball as they finished shooting 56 percent from the floor and 45 percent from deep while West Virginia State (12-8, 10-5) shot 38 percent from the field and 26 percent from deep.

GSC would start the game on a 7-0 run and eventually go on to take an 11 point lead 14-3 with 16:22 to play in the first half. West Virginia State then went on a small 5-0 run as they pulled within six, 14-8 at the 15:25 minute mark.

The Yellow Jackets then managed to tie the game up at the 8:24 minute mark at 19 all. However after that tie GSC went on an 18-0 run as they built an 18 point lead, 37-19 with 2:23 left till halftime.

The Pioneers would end up taking a 15 point lead into halftime, 41-26.

In the second half, GSC started on a 19-16 run as they held a 60-42 lead at the 15:01 minute mark. The Pioneers would hold a double digit lead for most of the second half but the Yellow Jackets would make a run and cut GSC's lead to 11, 79-68 with 6:33 on the clock.

The Pioneers would answer with two quick buckets as they went back up by 15, 83-68 with just over five minutes left in the game. WVSU would cut GSC's lead 12 points at the 3:54 minute mark, 87-75. Again the Pioneers would answer with two made free-throws by Dwayne Chastain Jr. and then a big three-pointer from Brooks Ely as GSC held a 17 point lead with under three minutes left.

The Yellow Jackets would make one final push but the Pioneers would not be denied as they upset West Virginia State on the road 92-79. Glenville State never trailed in the ball game.

The Pioneers won the rebounding battle by one, 40-39, and also outscored WVSU in the paint, 42-30.

GSC had five players in double figures with Brooks Ely leading the way with a game-high 22 points. Ely, also pulled down 10 rebounds as he posted a double-double. Dwayne Chastain Jr. was a spark off the bench as he scored 17 points in the win.

JR Kerr chipped in with 13 points off of the bench while Jon Dunmyer and Theo Brown each scored 12 points for GSC. Point-guard Darhius Nunn dished out 10 assists, his second game of 10 plus assists, while scoring nine points. Glenville State as a team dished out 22 assists on the night.

West Virginia State was led by Pat Johnson-Agwu as he scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Jeremiah Moore chipped in with 12 points.

Glenville State (4-16, 3-12) will now host the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston this Saturday, February 3rd for Winter Homecoming at 4:00 p.m. from inside the Waco Center.
