Pioneer Basketball Has Great Showing in Exhibition at Marshall University

Huntington, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer men's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Sunday in their first outing of the year in an exhibition game with the Marshall University Thundering Herd.

The Pioneers would take the Herd to the limit but came up just short as they fell, 113-108. GSC under the direction of first-year Head Coach Justin Caldwell the Pioneers drilled 17 three-pointers in the game.

The exciting and fast pace matchup saw 13 lead changes and eight ties, while GSC held the led for 16 minutes and 50 seconds.

The Pioneers shot lights out from deep as they went 17-of-37 from behind the three-point line. GSC's Phil Bledsoe, a Marshall transfer, missed the game-tying three-pointer with 31 seconds left as the Thundering Herd held onto the win.

GSC's Jamal Pollydore finished with a game-high 34 points for the Pioneers and finished the contest going 8-of-10 from three-point range.

Glenville State started the contest on an 11-0 run but Marshall would battle back and outscore the Pioneers 63-43 the rest of the half as the Thundering Herd took a 63-54 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers shortened Marshall's lead in the second half and eventually took a 71-70 lead on a jumper from GSC newcomer Karl Jeanty. In the rest of the half neither team led by more than six points.

C.J. Burks finished with a team-high 25 points for Marshall as he finished 10-of-13 shooting while dishing out five assists. John Elmore, the brother of GSC Assistant Coach Ot Elmore, scored 16 points to go with nine assists, and eight rebounds in 33 minutes.

GSC won the rebounding battle out rebounding MU, 46-44 in the contest.

Phil Bledsoe had the only double-double of the contest in his return to the Henderson Center as he scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Glenville State will open up the regular season on Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th in the University of Charleston Tip-off Classic. On Friday, GSC will battle the Griffins of Seton Hill at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday they will take on Bowie State at 2 p.m.
