Charleston, W.Va. – The GSC men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the early season Saturday as they defeated the Bowie State Bulldogs, 118-111.
Glenville State (2-0) drilled 14 three-pointers and shot 52 percent from the field to earn the victory. Bowie State (0-2) shot 50 percent from the floor and netted eight three-pointers.
Glenville State again got off to a hot start as they built an early 10 point lead at 15-5 early in the contest. The Pioneers later stretched it to 15 points at the 15:24 mark on a
Davion Johnson layup making it, 20-5.
GSC took that hot start while hitting 9-of-their-14 three's in the first half and built a 15 point halftime lead over the Bulldogs, 57-42. Â
Bowie State started the second half on a 22-16 run as they cut the Pioneers lead to nine at 73-64 with under 15:00 minutes to play. Then later the Bulldogs pulled within seven, 77-70, after a layup by Yohance Fleming with 13:01 left in the contest.
However, GSC answered as the Pioneers went on a 16-10 run and went back up by 13 points at the 8:04 minute mark at 93-80. The Bulldogs tried to make a late push and would cut the Pioneers lead to just three points at 114-111 with just 43 seconds to play.
For the second straight game GSC would hit their free-throws down the stretch as they held on to defeat Bowie State by seven, 118-111.
GSC finished the game shooting 40 percent from deep going 14-for-35 while Bowie State shot 36 percent from deep going 8-for-22. The Pioneers won the rebounding battle as they out rebounded the Bulldogs by seven, 46-39.
GSC led for 39:00 minutes in the contest and their largest lead was by 19 points.
Davion Johnson led GSC as he posted his second career double-double as a Pioneer scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Jamal Pollydore scored 22 points as he went 7-for-16 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Darhius Nunn chipped in with 22 points and had a career-high in assists with 12 in the contest.
Phil Bledsoe scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds while freshman
Howard Smith also scored in double figures scoring 12 points in the game.
Bowie State was led by Rinardo Perry as he scored a game-high 28 points.
Glenville State (2-0) will host Carlow University this Thursday, November 14
th in their home opener at 6 p.m. from inside the Waco Center.
