Institute, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer basketball team earned their first victory of the season defeating the Chowan University Hawks 98-72 on Saturday in the Wyndham Gardens Conference Challenge hosted by West Virginia State University. The Lady Pioneers forced 27 turnovers and drilled 13 three-pointers to secure the win.
Glenville State (1-0) had three players score in double figures and scored 22 fast break points. Chowan (0-1) also had three players score in double figures, but hit just three three-pointers in the contest.
Glenville State would find their selves trailing by one point, 24-23, with 2:28 left in the first. However newcomer for the Lady Pioneers,
Blaize Burgess would drill three straight three-pointers as they went up by six, 32-26.
Glenville State would ride that momentum and build an 11 point lead after the first quarter, 37-26.
In the second, GSC would outscore the Hawks 19-14 as they took a 56-40 lead into halftime.
Glenville State went on to outscore Chowan 42 to 32 in the third and fourth quarters as they earned a 26 point victory, 98-72.
The Lady Pioneers shot 42 percent from the floor and 34 percent from deep while the Hawks shot 36 percent from the floor and 18 percent from deep.
Glenville State scored 26 points off of 27 Chowan turnovers.
Emily Stoller scored a game-high and tied her career-high at GSC scoring 26 points as she drilled five three-pointers and grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman Re'Shawna Stone scored 17 points in her GSC debut.
Blaize Burgess scored 14 points as she hit four three-pointers for the Lady Pioneers.
Zakiyah Winfield chipped in with seven points and had six steals in the win.
Chowan was led by Danielle Weldon as she scored 25 points and had 13 rebounds posting a double-double.
Glenville State (1-0) will return to action tomorrow Sunday, November 11
th when they take on Livingstone in the Wyndham Gardens Conference Challenge at 1:30 p.m. from West Virginia State University.
