Hot Shooting Lifts Hilltoppers Past Pioneers

West Liberty, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2018-19 season on the road Saturday to the West Liberty University Hilltoppers, 158-106.

Glenville State (3-1, 0-1) shot 48 percent from the field and 35 percent from downtown. West Liberty (3-1, 1-0) shot an amazing 62 percent from the field and 53 percent from deep.

In the first half GSC would trail WLU by just three points at 10-7. However, the Hilltoppers then went on a huge run outscoring GSC 30-5. With that run West Liberty built a big lead in little time at, 40-13 with 10:31 to play until halftime.

Glenville State would try and cut into West Liberty's lead but their hot shooting would continue as they connected on 15 first half three-pointers as GSC trailed at the break by 36 points, 87-51.

West Liberty shot 70 percent from the field in the first and 68 percent from deep while Glenville State shot 46 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep.

In the second half, the Pioneers started on a 9-8 run but still trailed 95-60 with 16:30 to play. The Hilltoppers then broke the century mark with a three-pointer at the 15:42 mark as the Pioneers trailed 102-63.

Glenville State would try and weather the onslaught but the hot shooting of West Liberty proved to be too much as the Hilltoppers outscored the Pioneers 71-55 in the second half as GSC fell, 158-106.

The Hilltoppers won the rebounding battle 56 to 35. Glenville State turned the ball over 15 times and West Liberty scored 25 points off of them.

Kalin Johnson led the Pioneers with 29 points while freshman Howard Smith chipped in with 19 points.

Jamal Pollydore and Darhius Nunn each scored 13 apiece. Nunn also dished out nine assists. Davion Johnson scored 12 points.

West Liberty had eight players score in double figures with Dalton Bolon scoring a game-high 31 points while Tyler Primmer chipped in 22 points. Marlon Moore Jr. posted a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Glenville State (3-1, 0-1) will host the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit at 7:30 p.m. this Monday, November 19th from inside the Waco Center.
