Lady Pioneers Fall on the Road to the Fighting Falcons of FSU

Fairmont, W.Va. – On a cold shooting night for GSC the No. 18 Lady Pioneers went on the road and suffered their first loss of the season to the Fairmont State University Fighting Falcons on Wednesday night, 98-77. 

Glenville State (5-1, 2-1) went just 8-of-38 from deep for 21 percent while Fairmont State (2-4, 1-2) hit 11-of-18 from behind the arc as they finished shooting 61 percent from deep.

Fairmont State got off to a fast start and raced out to an 8-0 lead. Glenville State's first points didn't come until the 8:12 minute mark of the first as they made it, 8-2.

The Fighting Falcons then took that fast start and built a 12 point lead at 18-6 with 5:24 to play in the first quarter. The Lady Pioneers would weather the storm and go on a 20-9 run to close out the first as they trailed Fairmont State by just one, 27-26.

After a fast and furious first, the second quarter saw both teams struggle to score. Both teams combined for just 30 points. However GSC outscored FSU 18-12 in the quarter as they took a five point lead into halftime, 44-39.

The Fighting Falcons started the third on a 9-2 run as they took a two point lead, 48-46 with 5:52 to play in the quarter. GSC's Deonasja Scott then tied the game up at 48 all on the next possession as she drilled two free-throws. FSU then went on to outscore GSC in the quarter, 30-17 as the Lady Pioneers trailed by eight entering the fourth quarter, 69-61.

In the fourth, FSU's Sierra Kotchman came alive and drilled 3-of-her-6 three-pointers in the quarter and the shooting struggles continued for GSC as they fell by 21 points, 98-77.

Glenville State won the rebounding battle 47 to 40. The Lady Pioneers also had an advantage scoring in the paint as they outscored FSU 26-10.

GSC forced FSU into 26 turnovers however the Lady Pioneers turned it over 21 times in the game.

Courtney Davis tallied a double-double for GSC as she scored a team-high 16 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Donasja Scott scored 14 points off the bench while Ty Armstrong chipped in with 11 points.

Emily Stoller finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Fairmont State was led by Sierra Kotchman as she scored a game-high 28 points. Kotchman went 10-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 from deep. Rachel Laskody scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Brooke Kurucz chipped in with 26 points.

Glenville State (5-1, 2-1) will return to the court this Saturday, December 1st as they host the Rams of Shepherd University at 2 p.m. from inside the Waco Center.
