Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer basketball team outscored the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit 52-40 in the second half as they claimed their 23
rd straight win and 24
th at home on Thursday night from the Waco Center, 95-82.
Glenville State (24-1, 19-0) only forced Wheeling Jesuit (11-14, 9-10) into 14 turnovers but turned those into 27 points in the victory.
Glenville State and Wheeling Jesuit would battle back and forth in the first half of action as neither team held a lead larger than eight however the Lady Pioneers would take a one point lead into halftime, 43-42. The first half had one lead change and four ties.
In the second half,
Abby Stoller would knock down back-to-back three's as she gave GSC a seven point lead, 49-42 with 8:24 in the third quarter. The Lady Pioneers then went on a 20-14 run as they built a 13 point lead, 69-56 with 2:22 to play in the quarter.
GSC ended up taking a nine point lead into the fourth quarter, 69-60.
Wheeling Jesuit started the fourth on a 6-1 run as they cut the Lady Pioneers lead to just four points at 70-66 with 7:58 in the game. However GSC responded as they outscored WJU 12-2 to take a 14 point lead 82-68 and never looked back as they went on to claim the 13 point victory, 95-82.
Glenville State shot well on the night shooting 42 percent from the floor and 30 percent from deep while Wheeling Jesuit shot 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from deep.
The Cardinals outscored the Lady Pioneers by three points in the paint 48-45 however GSC's bench outscored WJU's bench 38-6. GSC also had a huge advantage in second-chance points as they outscored Wheeling Jesuit, 33-3.
Glenville State received two big performances from
Paris McLeod and
Courtney Davis as they both recorded double-doubles. McLeod scored 27 points to go along with 11 rebounds as she earned her second double-double of the year. She also dished out five assists and came away with three steals.
Davis, who has now posted back-to-back double-double, scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as she recorded her six double-double this season.
Julie Bishop and
Emily Stoller both added 12 points each in the win.
Wheeling Jesuit was led by Mariah Callen as she scored 27 points while Monica Burns and Chenelle Moore each scored 19 apiece.
Glenville State (24-1, 19-0) will hit the road this Saturday, February 17
th as they travel to West Liberty University for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with the Hilltoppers. Â
