Glenville, W.Va. – The No. 7/8 Glenville State Lady Pioneer basketball team outlasted the West Liberty Hilltoppers on the road Saturday as they stay undefeated in league play and won their 24
th straight game, 106-103.
Glenville State (25-1, 20-0) got a big performance from
Paris McLeod as she scored 39 points tying her career high while West Liberty (12-14, 11-9) saw Marissa Brown score a game-high 43 points.
The Lady Pioneers started the contest by scoring the first five points of the game. After the fast start by GSC, they then went on a run outscoring West Liberty 6-3 over the next minute as they held an 11-3 lead with 8:12 in the first quarter.
The Hilltoppers however bounced back and then ended the first by outscoring the Lady Pioneers, 17-14, but GSC held a five point lead after one, 25-20.
The second quarter is where GSC made separation as they started the quarter on an 11-6 run to take a 10 point lead, 36-26 with 5:31 to play till halftime. Glenville State ended up outscoring West Liberty by 10 points, 29-19, in the second quarter as they took a 15 point lead into halftime, 54-39.
GSC shot 47 percent from the floor in the first half and 37 percent from deep while WLU shot 41 percent from the field and 23 percent from behind the arc.
The Hilltoppers came out in the third and scored the first seven points as they cut the Lady Pioneers lead to single digits, eight points, at 54-46 with 8:57 on the clock. West Liberty continued their hot play as they went on a 7-3 run to pull with four points of GSC, 57-53 with 7:53 in the quarter.
West Liberty then went on a 13-9 run as they tied the game up at 66 all with 2:16 to play in the third. Despite GSC getting outscored by 10 points in the third quarter, 31-21 by the Hilltoppers the Lady Pioneers still held a five point lead entering the fourth quarter, 75-70.
In the fourth quarter, both teams would battle back and forth as we ended up tied at 92 all with 4:14 to play. West Liberty then went on a small 6-5 run as they took a 98-97 lead with 3:04 to play. However GSC would respond on the next possession as
Courtney Davis drilled a three-pointer to retake the lead.
The Lady Pioneers then went on an 8-0 run as they went up 105-98 with 1:57 left. But the Hilltoppers made a run of their own, 5-0, as they pulled within two points, 105-103 with just 36 second left.
West Liberty had a shot to tie it up but it would come up short and force the Hilltoppers to foul as they sent
Paris McLeod to the free-throw line. McLeod hit just 1-of-2 from the strip making it 106-103. West Liberty still had a shot at tying it up but Audrey Tingle's jumper fell short as GSC held on to the 106-103 victory.
Glenville State finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field and 30 percent from deep while West Liberty shot 53 percent from the floor and 26 percent from behind the arc.
The Lady Pioneers defense forced the Hilltoppers into 24 turnovers and scored 26 points off of them. West Liberty had a big advantage on the inside outscoring GSC 62-46 in the paint.
Glenville State had three players in double figures with
Paris McLeod leading the way with 39 points tying her career high as a Lady Pioneer. McLeod also grabbed eight rebounds.
Courtney Davis scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds while
Tayana Stewart chipped in with 11 points off the bench.
West Liberty had four players in double figures with Marissa Brown scoring a game-high 43 points and grabbing 25 rebounds as she recorded a double-double. McKenna Shives scored 18 points while Audrey Tingle scored 15 points and dished out eight assists. Johnie Olkosky chipped in with 11 points and also had eight assists.
Glenville State (25-1, 20-0) will return home to the Waco Center this Wednesday, February 21
st as they host the Rams of Shepherd University at 5:30 p.m. on Senior Night.
