Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers fell on the road Saturday afternoon to the No. 5 Hilltoppers of West Liberty University, 105-66.
Glenville State (6-20, 4-16) hit just four three-pointers in the contest while No. 5 West Liberty (24-1, 19-1) didn't shoot much better from deep but hit eight total three's in the game.
The Pioneers fell behind early as West Liberty jumped out to an 11-5 lead with 15:44 in the first half. The Hilltoppers then went on a huge run outscoring GSC 22-9 as they took a 19 point lead, 33-14 with under 10 minutes to play.
Glenville State made a run of their own as they outscored West Liberty in the final 10 minutes of the half, 27-24, but the Hilltoppers held a 16 point lead at halftime, 57-41.
The Pioneers shot well in the first half as they shot 42 percent from the field and even better from deep shooting 50 percent. The Hilltoppers shot 45 percent from the floor and just 23 percent from deep.
West Liberty again got off to a hot start as they started the second half on an 11-4 run as they took a, 68-45 lead. The Pioneers tried to mount a comeback but the Hilltoppers proved to be too much as they went on to outscore GSC in the second half 48-25 as WLU won by 39 points, 105-66.
GSC finished the game shooting 31 percent from the field and 21 percent from deep while WLU shot 44 percent from the floor and 22 percent from deep.
The Hilltoppers won the rebounding battle by 26, 62-36.The Pioneers turned the ball over 22 times while West Liberty gave it away 13 times.
Glenville State's bench scored 38 points in the contest while West Liberty's bench scored 63 points. The Hilltoppers also scored 26 second chance points while the Pioneers scored just five.
The Pioneers had three players in double figures with
Dwayne Chastain Jr. and
Jon Dunmyer each scoring 14 points.
Darhius Nunn chipped in with 10 points.
Also for GSC,
Elisha Mayberry scored six points and had five rebounds while
Jordan Jackson scored six points as well and had three rebounds.
Dan Monteroso led the way for West Liberty with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Tyler Primmer scored 15 points while Jordan Watson scored 14 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Brandon Smith chipped in with 11 points.
Glenville State (6-20, 4-16) will return home next Wednesday, February 21
st as they host Shepherd University at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
