Athens, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer baseball team wrapped up their four-game series with the Concord University Mountain Lions on Sunday as they split the double-header.
Glenville State took the first game of the afternoon, 8-5.
The Pioneers struck first in the opening inning as Tre' Smith homered on the first at bat of the game. Later in the same inning
Christian Hedinger singled up the middle scoring
Bryan Bayliss. Cater Boswell, then singled to right field as
Christian Hedinger and
John Peloro crossed the plate as GSC led 4-0.
Concord responded in the bottom of the first as they scored a run off of two hits making it 4-1.
GSC added three more runs in the fourth when
Anthony Jarvis hit an RBI single to left field scoring
Bryan Bayliss.
Christian Hedinger singled to right for his second RBI of the game scoring
Anthony Jarvis and
John Peloro to put the Pioneers up 7-1.
The Mountain Lions would again answer back scoring three runs of their own in the fourth while pulling within three, 7-4.
Glenville State added another run in the sixth as
John Peloro doubled to right scoring
Bryan Bayliss. Concord also added one run in the bottom of the sixth as GSC took game one, 8-5.
The Pioneers recorded 14 hits and committed an error in the field. Concord finished with 11 hits and committed four errors.
Freshman
Adam Riggleman picked up his fourth win of the year pitching 4.0 innings allowing four runs on eight hits. Joes Rodrigues earned his sixth save of the season.
Tre' Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and hit his fourth home run of the year.
John Peloro went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Christian Hedinger finished game one 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Game two of the day saw the Pioneers fall to the Mountain Lions, 11-3.
Glenville State managed eight hits but committed five costly errors while Concord finished with 11 hits.
The Pioneers struck first again in the second when
Zach Bacon hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring
Anthony Jarvis as GSC led 1-0.
Concord took their first lead of the day in the third, scoring two runs to go up 2-1.
However, GSC tied it up at 2-2 in the fourth when
Logan Henderson flied out to left field as
Anthony Jarvis crossed the plate for the second time.
Concord responded in the bottom of the fourth as they scored two runs on three hits to go up, 4-2.
The Pioneers added another run in the fifth when
John Peloro doubled to right center scoring Tre' Smith as the GSC pulled within one, 4-3.
Concord busted the game open in the bottom of the fifth as they scored three runs while adding four more in the sixth. Concord was able to hold the Pioneers scoreless as they defeated GSC in game two, 11-3.
James Finnemore pitched 4.0 innings giving up four runs on six hits with three strike outs.
Tre' Smith went 3-for-4 while
John Peloro went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Also for the Pioneers,
Jordan Braniff went 2-for-3.
Glenville State (13-25, 10-14) will hit the road this Wednesday, April 25 for a non-conference double-header with Millersville University.
