Pioneers Fall in “I-79 Barrel Classic” to Battlers of Alderson Broaddus

Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer football team fell in the "I-79 Barrel Classic" on Saturday to the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers, 45-17.
 
Glenville State (1-3, 1-2 MEC) rushed for just 88 yards and had 256 total yards in the contest while Alderson Broaddus (1-3) rushed for 185 yards and had over 540 total yards of offense.  
 
Scoring began in quarter one as Alderson Broaddus would strike first as they connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass. However, the Battlers would fail to convert the two-point conversion as they led early 6-0 with 11:07 left in the quarter. 
 
GSC would strike back quickly on a one -yard plunge by Mario Pender. GSC would take a 7-6 lead following a Justin Watts successful PAT. Then with 5:36 to go in the first quarter, the Battlers kicker Justin Hampton would boot a 37-yard field goal to give Alderson Broaddus a 9-7 lead. 
 
Scoring would resume in the second quarter as AB would connect on another field goal this one coming from 39-yards out as the Battlers took a 12-7 lead with 13:26 on the clock. Then early in the second quarter, AB's Ryan Smith would intercept a Jaylen McNair pass and take it for 42 yards for a Battlers touchdown. The PAT would go wide and GSC would trail 18-7.  
 
The Battlers then took a 24-7 lead as Jalen Jackson caught a 29 yard pass from Joe Czelusniak with 6:01 to play till halftime.
 
Glenville State with just 12 seconds to go till halftime saw Justin Watts knock through a 42 yard field goal to cut the Battlers lead to 24-10 as we headed into the half.  
 
In the third AB took a 31-10 lead on a two yard touchdown rush by Jalen Jackson at the 1:38 minute mark. The Pioneers then found the endzone. GSC's DeQuan Hopkins would haul in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jaylen McNair to cut the lead to 31-17 as we headed into the fourth.
 
In the fourth quarter, AB would score two quick touchdowns as the Pioneers would fall in the rivalry known as the "I-79 Barrel Classic", 45-17.   
 
GSC ran 64 total plays for 256 yards while AB tallied 77 total plays for 540 yards.
 
The Battlers won the time of possession battle as they held the ball for 34:13 and the Pioneers had the ball for 25:47. Glenville State finished the day just 1-of-12 on third down conversions while Alderson Broaddus went 7-of-14.
 
Thomas Boles led the rushing attack for GSC as he carried the ball 13 times for 75 yards while fellow running back Mario Pender rushed for 30 yards on 14 attempts and a touchdown.
 
Jaylen McNair went 12-for-25 for 163 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Back-up quarterback John Keffer also saw some action as he went 1-for-4 for five yards.
 
Glenville State was shorthanded at the wideout position as Javon Butler and Tre' Crutcher both did not play due to injuries. Gary Bacon caught five passes for 53 yards while DeQuan Hopkins caught three passed for 87 yards and hauled in his first career touchdown as a Pioneer.
 
Dominic Cizauskas led the Pioneer defense with 14 total tackles while Quintavius Twine finished with 11 tackles.
 
Alderson Broaddus was led by quarterback Joe Czelusniak as he threw for 355 yards going 24-of-32 and had three touchdowns. Maurice Thomas caught seven passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.
 
On the ground Jalen Jackson rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown.
 
The Battlers defense was led by Matt Jackson as he totaled seven tackles in the contest.
 
Glenville State (1-3, 1-2 MEC) will return home to Morris Stadium next Saturday, September 29th when they host the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University on Hall of Fame weekend as Glenville State inducts six new members. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
