GSC Football Falls to WV State on Hall of Fame Weekend

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team fell at home on Saturday afternoon to the visiting West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets, 31-17 on Hall of Fame Weekend.
 
Glenville State (1-4, 1-3 MEC) gained 311 total offensive yards with 151 coming on the ground while West Virginia State (2-3, 2-3 MEC) tallied 458 total yards with 285 in the air.  
 
After a scoreless first quarter, the Pioneers would put the first points on the board on a 35-yard double touchdown pass from J'Quan Anderson to Mario Pender. Justin Watts would boot the PAT through to give Glenville State a 7-0 lead. Moments later, WVSU would get on the board behind a 66-yard touchdown pass from Faustino Saucedo to Tyrell Henderson.  The PAT would be converted to tie the game, 7-7.  With 4:06 to go in the first half, Yellow Jackets kicker, Aaron Ball would kick a 47-yard field goal to give WVSU a 10-7 lead.  West Virginia State then added another score, a 26-yard touchdown pass from Saucedo to Henderson; their second hookup of the game as the Yellow Jackets took a 17-7 lead into halftime
 
A fake reverse on the opening kickoff of the second half gave the Jackets great field position.  WV State's Carl Garmon would put six points on the board behind a two-yard touchdown run. The PAT was successful, as WVSU would take a 24-7 lead. 
 
With 6:21 to go in the third quarter, Jaylen McNair would hook up with Gary Bacon from six yards out to cut the Jackets lead to, 24-14.  The ensuing kickoff proved to be the second successful onside kick attempt for the Pioneers.  GSC then put three points on the board behind a Watts 25-yard field goal. GSC would trail 24-17 heading into the fourth quarter. Calil Watkins would put the final points on the board with a two-yard touchdown run with a minute to go in the game as GSC would fall, 31-17.
 
Mario Pender rushed 25 times for 97 yards while also catching seven balls for a total of 75 yards and a touchdown. Jaylen McNair went 16-of-28 through the air for 125 yards and a touchdown.
 
Wideout DeQuan Hopkins hauled in four passes for 47 yards for GSC.  
 
Defensively, Dominic Cizauskas kept pace for the NCAA DII tackle lead by tallying 16 total stops, including one tackle for loss and forcing a fumble. Samuel Thomas added 11 tackles, Amede Vital had nine, and Wil Mayes finished with seven.
 
For West Virginia State, Calil Wilkins would carry the ball 27 times for 102 yards and one touchdown. Tyrell Henderson would lead all receivers in the contest with seven receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Faustino Saucedo completed 19-of-33 balls for 285 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Joe Stoneman led the Jackets with 13 total tackles, and 2.5 tackles for loss. Robert Branch had 10 solo tackles; Moises Valcare had eight, while Dustin Crouser would rack up seven stops.
 
Glenville State (1-4, 1-3 MEC) will return to action next Saturday, October 6th for a MEC matchup at Concord University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
