Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer football team dropped their home opener to the Notre Dame College Falcons on Saturday, 27-17.
Glenville State (1-1, 1-1) racked up 300 passing yards while limiting Notre Dame (2-0, 2-0) to just 132 passing yards. However, NDC outgained GSC in the game in total offense, 383 to the Pioneers 325.
The first quarter proved to be a defensive battle as we headed into the second quarter scoreless. Only 97 total combined yards between the Falcons and the Pioneers took place in the first.
Scoring would begin in the second quarter as the Falcons running back, Jaleel McLaughlin, would scamper 73 yards for a Notre Dame Touchdown, 7-0. NDC would score again with 5:11 to go in the half behind a 13-yard touchdown pass. The PAT however was blocked by
Quintavius Twine and
Samuel Thomas then returned it for a defensive PAT. Notre Dame would lead, 13-2. With just 22 seconds to go in the half, Notre Dame would strike again to take a 20-2 lead at the half.
To start the second half, Notre Dame would score to take a 27-2 lead at the 13:07 mark. GSC would answer on the following possession, as
Jaylen McNair would find
Javon Butler for a 36-yard touchdown as GSC would cut the Falcons lead to, 27-9.
In the fourth, GSC would find the endzone. This time on a 66-yard touchdown pass from McNair to Butler; their second touchdown hookup of the game. The two-point conversion would be good as McNair would scramble and eventually find Tre' Crutcher in the back of the endzone. GSC would cut the lead to 27-17 with 4:34 to go in the game. GSC's defense then forced a fumble on the Falcons next possession to get the ball back. However, the Pioneers ended up giving the ball right back as they fumbled on their next possession as Glenville State came up short at home, 27-17.
Glenville State tallied 76 total plays for 325 yards while Notre Dame ran 73 plays for 383. The Pioneers ended up just 2-of-15 on third down conversions while Notre Dame wasn't much better as they went just 3-of-16.
Mario Pender rushed for just 23 yards on nine carries while
Thomas Boles totted the ball 10 times for 13 yards.
Jaylen McNair went 26-of-50 for 300 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Javon Butler had himself quite a game as he caught 12 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
Tre Crutcher hauled in 10 balls for 87 yards.
Defensively,
Dominic Cizauskas would lead the Pioneers with 11 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. Twine also racked up eight tackles for GSC.
Notre Dame's Jaleel McLaughlin rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Chris Brimm went 19-for-26 for 132 yards and two touchdowns for the Falcons.
Glenville State (1-1, 1-1) will return to action next Saturday, September 15
th when they hit the road and travel to Shepherd University for 12 p.m. matchup with the Rams.
