Urbana, Ohio – The Glenville State Pioneer men's basketball team suffered a tough loss on the road Saturday as Urbana connected on a three-pointer in overtime as the clock expired to defeat GSC, 91-94.
Glenville State (7-7, 2-6 MEC) had four players score in double figures but it wasn't enough as they fell in overtime. Urbana (4-8, 2-6 MEC) saw five players post double figures with two scoring 20 plus points. Â
The Pioneers got off to a great start as they held an early 10-3 lead at the 15:47 mark of the opening half. Glenville State then went on a 10-4 run as they stretched their lead to 13 points, 20-7 with 12:34 to play.
Urbana then made a small run as they tried to get back into the contest. The Blue Knights outscored GSC 13-11 as they pulled within 10, 31-21 at the 6:26 minute mark. The Pioneers then managed to outscore the Blue Knights 17-16 to end the first half as they held an 11 point lead at halftime, 48-37.
Glenville State connected on 8-of-15 three-pointers in the first for 53 percent while Urbana netted 5-of-16 from deep for 31 percent.
Urbana came out in the second half and started on a 15-7 run as they cut the Pioneers deficit to just three, 55-52 with 13:48 to play. Jump to the 7:26 minute mark and the Blue Knights took a one point lead on a three-pointer as they now led GSC, 70-69.
But the Pioneers answered right back as they went on a 9-3 run and retook a five point lead, 78-73 with under five minutes left in the contest. Both teams then went back and forth as neither team led by more than five points.
Glenville State and Urbana found their selves all knotted up at 83 all after a jumper by
Phil Bledsoe hit the bottom of the net with just 45 seconds left to play. Urbana then called a timeout however GSC's defense would come away with a stop. The Pioneers then had a chance to win the contest but
Kalin Johnson jumper would not go as Urbana came away with the rebound and we headed into overtime tied at 83-83.
In overtime neither team could break the tie until the 2:43 minute mark as Urbana's Michael Ryan drilled a three-pointer to put the Blue Knights up at three, 86-83. GSC's
Phil Bledsoe then got fouled on the next possession however he would only hit 1-of-2 at the free-throw line. Urbana then capitalized on the next possession as they scored a layup as they now led by four, 88-84.
Again,
Phil Bledsoe answered back with a layup as he pulled GSC within two, 88-86 but with just 1:25 left to play. After a foul by the Pioneers, Urbana would knock down two free-throws as they went up 90-86. Glenville State then had a costly turnover on their next possession and again was forced to foul with less than 50 seconds to play.
UU's Datrey Long then went 1-for-2 from the line as the Blue Knights led 91-89. But GSC's newcomer
Noah Frampton hit a deep three to pull the Pioneers within two, 91-89 with 39 seconds left. Then a missed three-pointer by the Blue Knights led to a Pioneer dunk by
Howard Smith as he tied it up at 91-91 with just five seconds left. However, Urbana's Malik Jacobs would prove to be the hero as he connected on a three-pointer as the clock expired as the Blue Knights defeated the Pioneers, 94-91.
Glenville State shot 50 percent from the field and 58 percent from deep as they hit 15-for-31 from downtown. Urbana finished the contest shooting 51 percent from the floor and 42 percent from deep.
GSC struggled from the free-throw line as they went 10-for-15 for 66 percent. Urbana won the rebounding battle by one, 35-34.
Glenville State led for most of the contest and their biggest lead was by 17 points. Urbana forced the Pioneers into 14 turnovers and scored 21 points off of them while the Blue Knights gave it away eight times but GSC only scored seven points off of them.
Phil Bledsoe scored a game-high 33 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as he posted his seventh double-double of the season. Pioneer newcomer
Noah Frampton chipped in with 16 points as he hit 5-of-7 three-pointers in the game.
Kalin Johnson scored 13 points and dished out five assists while
Howard Smith chipped in with 10 points.
Urbana was led by Malik Jacobs as he scored 26 points and hit the game winning three-pointer in overtime. Ethan Snapp chipped in with 20 points for the Blue Knights.
Glenville State (7-7, 2-6 MEC) will hit the road this Thursday, January 17
th for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets. Â Â Â
