Institute, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers fell on the road Thursday evening to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University by 11, 104-93.
Glenville State (7-8, 2-7) shot 42 percent from the field and went 32 percent from deep hitting 11-of-34 from deep. West Virginia State (7-8, 4-5) shot 50 percent from the field and 30 percent from deep going 8-for-26.
Glenville State and West Virginia State would both get off to a furious start. However the Yellow Jackets held the early advantage over the Pioneers as they led by four, 14-10, at the first media timeout of the game.
West Virginia State then went on a 10-0 run as they took an 18-10 lead but GSC's Howard Smith ended the run with a corner three-pointer at the 12:09 minute mark. Later in the first GSC went on a small 4-0 run as they pulled within seven, 29-22.
Glenville State then found themselves down 18. The Pioneers went on to outscore West Virginia State 27-26 to end the first half as they went into halftime trailing the Yellow Jackets by just eight, 55-47.
In the second half WVSU jumped out to a 10 point lead, 68-58 with 13:48 left to play. The Pioneers then made a surge and went on a 15-10 run as they pulled within five at the 7:29 minute mark trailing, 78-73. However, the Yellow Jackets would then make a run of their own as they went back up by 10, 88-78 with just under four minutes to play.
Glenville State made one last charge and cut the Yellow Jackets lead to six, 99-93 but only had 17 seconds left in the contest. West Virginia State would make their free-throws down the stretch as they ended up defeating the Pioneers, 104-93.
The Yellow Jackets bench outscored the Pioneers bench 30-19 while they also won the rebounding battle 49-36.
Phil Bledsoe scored a team high 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as he posted his eighth double-double of the year. Jamal Pollydore chipped in with 18 points while Kalin Johnson and Howard Smith each scored 17 points.
Noah Frampton dished out a team high six assists to go with six points.
West Virginia State University had five players in double figures with Pat Johnson-Agwu scoring a game-high 30 points and pulled down six rebounds. Gus Stone chipped in with 20 points while Ernest Jenkins, Frank Agyemang and Jeremiah Moore all had 10 points in the contest.
Glenville State (7-8, 2-7) will return to action this Saturday, January 19th as they host the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. admission is Free if fans bring a non-perishable food item. Â
