Urbana, Ohio – GSC's freshman duo of Re'Shawna Stone and Zakiyah Winfeild each scored in double figures as they helped the Lady Pioneers come back from a one point halftime deficit to earn a 13 point road win on Saturday over the Urbana University Blue Knights, 90-77.
Glenville State (12-2, 7-1 MEC) forced 30 turnovers in the contest and turned them into 32 points as they picked up their second straight MEC road win. Urbana (1-11, 1-7 MEC) totaled 19 assists in the contest as a team while their bench scored 25 points in the contest.
The Lady Pioneers got off to a nice start and built a five point lead at the first media timeout of the first quarter at 15-10 at the 5:50 minute mark. However, Urbana made a run to end the first quarter outscoring GSC 13-8 as we ended up knotted at 23-23.
The Blue Knights started the second quarter right where they left off as they outscored the Lady Pioneers 8-4 and took a 31-27 lead at the 7:28 minute mark. Eventually Urbana took the fast start in the second and went on to outscore GSC 24-23 in the quarter as they held a one point lead at halftime, 47-46.
The Lady Pioneers shot 39 percent in the first half while Urbana was red hot shooting 51 percent from the field. GSC also struggled from deep hitting just 1-of-17 three-pointers in the first half for five percent while the Blue Knights hit 4-of-10 for 40 percent.
The Blue Knights got off to another quick start in the start of the third saw Urbana outscore GSC 9-8 and take a 56-54 lead with 5:50 left in the quarter. However, GSC would come on strong and make some separation. The Lady Pioneers ended the third on a 19-6 run as they took an 11 point lead over the Blue Knights, 73-62.
Glenville State outscored Urbana 10-7 to start the fourth quarter as they held a 14 point lead, 83-69 with under four minutes to play. The Lady Pioneers eventually went on to outscore Urbana 17-15 in the fourth as they walked away with a 13 point road win, 90-77.
In the contest Glenville State ended up shooting 39 percent from the field as they went 36-for-92 while they had a rough day shooting from deep as they went just 3-for-31 for nine percent in the contest. Urbana finished the day shooting 44 percent from the floor as they hit 31-of-their-70 shots. UU made 6-of-their-23 three-pointers as they finished shooting 26 percent from deep.
GSC won the rebounding battle by three, 54-51, while also pulling down 20 offensive boards to Urbana's nine. Glenville State outscored the Blue Knights in the paint 59 to 33 while also outscoring them in fast break points 49 to 17.The Lady Pioneers defense came away with 20 steals while the Blue Knights had just two.
Re'Shawna Stone scored a game-high 23 points while grabbing four rebounds and dished out five assists to lead GSC. Fellow freshman guard
Zakiyah Winfield scored 14 points in the win while also coming away with six steals.
Taychaun Hubbard chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds while
Courtney Davis scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as she posted her third double-double of the year and fifth game this season with double digit rebounds.
Sa'dera Johnson led the Blue Knights with 19 points while Sylvia Hudson posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Glenville State (11-2, 7-1 MEC) will hit the road this Thursday, January 17
th as they travel to West Virginia State University for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Yellow Jackets. Â
