Institute, W.Va. – The GSC Lady Pioneers had five players post double figures as they scored over 100 points for the eighth time this season as they defeated the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets on the road, 109-79.
Glenville State (13-2, 8-1) shot 50 percent from the field and forced West Virginia State (4-11, 3-6) into 27 turnovers as they picked up road win.
After an early 5-5 tie in the contest the Lady Pioneers turned up the defensive pressure as they went on a quick 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. Glenville State then made more separation at the 4:51 minute mark as they went on a 17-0 run while holding a 20 point lead, 29-9.
The Yellow Jackets would respond as they ended the first on an 8-0 run as they pulled within 11, 29-17.
The Lady Pioneers started the second quarter on an 11-4 run building another 20 point lead, 41-21 with 6:15 to play until halftime. GSC later stretched their lead to 25 points at the 3:11 mark at 51-26.
The Yellow Jackets attempted a late run to end the half however the Lady Pioneers took the 25 point lead into halftime, 61-36.
Glenville State had a great shooting performance in the first half as they shot 52 percent from the floor and 50 percent from deep. The Lady Pioneers defense also forced WVSU into 19 first half turnovers.
In the second half it was all GSC as they outscored WVSU 26-23 in the third and 22-20 in the fourth. The Lady Pioneers went on to claim a 30 point road victory, 109-79.
Glenville State finished the night hitting 18-of-47 three-pointers for 38 percent while West Virginia State went 4-of-31 from deep for just 12 percent.
The Lady Pioneers defense scored 38 points off of the Yellow Jackets 27 turnovers. Â
Ty Armstrong scored a game-high 21 points and tied her career high as a Pioneer. Armstrong went 4-of-8 from deep. Donasja Scott posted her first career double-double in the win as she scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Abby Stoller scored a career high 19 points as she drilled five three-pointers. Re'Shawna Stone chipped in with 15 points to go with four assists and four rebounds while Emily Stoller finished with 14 points.
West Virginia State was led by Charity Shears as she scored 12 points going 4-for-4 from deep while Amari Grace chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Glenville State (13-2, 8-1) will host the University of Charleston Golden Eagles in a huge MEC matchup this Saturday, January 19th from inside the Waco Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and admission is FREE with a non-perishable food item.
