Pioneers Comeback Falls Short on the Road at Urbana

Urbana, Ohio – After trailing 31-10 late in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers would come storming back scoring 14 unanswered points and even recover an on-side kick. However it wouldn't be enough as GSC fell on the road at Urbana, 31-24.

Glenville State (3-3, 2-3 MEC) finished the afternoon with 228 yards of total offense on 61 plays while Urbana (4-2, 4-2 MEC) ran 73 plays racking up 361 total yards.

The Pioneers would open up the contest with the ball, however GSC would go three-and-out on their first possession as the Blue Knights forced them to punt.
Urbana then took their first possession of the game and made the Pioneers pay as Erik Ware hit a 43 yard field goal as UU took a 3-0 lead at the 9:07 minute mark of the first quarter.

The Blue Knights would hold on to that 3-0 lead as we headed into the second quarter.

Justin Watts would tie the game up for the Pioneers at 3-3 as he connected on a 43 yard field goal, his 13th of the season, with 6:57 to play until halftime.
Urbana would take control of the contest right before the half as Eddie Stockett hit Jesse Bray on a 16 yard touchdown pitch and catch as the Blue Knights took a 10-3 lead into the break.

Urbana would get the ball to start the third. However on UU's opening drive GSC's defense would come away with a turnover as Samuel Thomas would strip sack UU's Eddie Stockett and GSC's Jose Gutierrez would return it 25 yards to the endzone tying it up at 10-10 with 14:50 to play in the quarter.

Again, the Blue Knights broke the tie this time at the 7:36 mark as WR Sanders took it in from 10 yards out as they led GSC, 17-10. Urbana then made it a two score game when Eddie Stockett hit Justin Dennis on a 13 yard TD pass as they went up, 24-10 as we headed into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth GSC's offense would try and get going but would struggle to get points as the first two possessions of the quarter would be three-and-out. The Blue Knights then added to their lead at the 7:23 minute mark as Stockett hit Jeff Garcia for an 18 yard touchdown pass as they now led, 31-10.

Austin Ratliff would respond for GSC on the ensuing kickoff as he would race 87 yards returning the kickoff into the endzone as the Pioneers made it, 31-17 with 7:01 to play in the contest.  It would be Ratliff's second kickoff return for a touchdown this season.

Then late in the fourth with just seven seconds left Jaylen McNair hit Austin Ratliff on a nine yard TD pass making it, 31-24.

Glenville State's Dominic Cizauskas then recovered the on-side kick by Justin Watts at the Urbana 45 yard line. GSC would have one shot at the endzone with just five seconds left. Jaylen McNair would attempt one last Hail Mary trying to connect with Austin Ratliff however the Pioneers came up short falling on the road, 31-24.

GSC rushed for just a total of 53 yards while UU had 87 yards on the ground. In the air, the Blue Knight had 274 passing yards while the Pioneers had 175 passing yards.

Glenville State had a tough day on third downs as they finished just 1-of-12 while Urbana went 6-of-17. The Pioneers also went just 1-of-4 on fourth downs while the Blue Knights went 3-for-4.

Urbana was perfect in the redzone as they went 4-for-4 while GSC finished the game just 1-for-2.

Mario Pender totted the ball 10 times to lead GSC's ground attack rushing for 42 yards.

Timothy Heltzel went 12-for-25 with 104 yards while Jaylen McNair went 9-for-12 for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Tight end Isaac Myers hauled in seven passes for 84 yards while Austin Ratliff caught five balls for 40 yards and a touchdown. Ratliff also had an 87 yard kickoff returned for a touchdown.

Dominic Cizauskas led the Pioneers defense with 17 total tackles while Samuel Thomas finished with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Jose Gutierrez finished with one tackle and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Urbana's Eddie Stockett went 28-for-45 for 274 yards and three touchdowns.

Rafael Floyd caught nine passes for 76 yards and Justin Dennis caught four balls for 46 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Bray also had a touchdown reception.
Chris Richardson led UU's defense with eight tackles.

Glenville State (3-3, 2-3 MEC) will return to action next Saturday, October 19th as they host West Virginia Wesleyan College at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
