Pioneers Roll in Homecoming Victory

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers took an 18-0 lead into halftime and ran away with a 35 point victory over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Homecoming Saturday at Morris Stadium, 42-7.

Glenville State (4-3, 3-3 MEC) racked up 487 total yards of offense while West Virginia Wesleyan (1-6, 1-5 MEC) finished with just 175 yards of total offense on 64 plays.

The Pioneers would take a 10-0 lead into the second quarter over the Bobcats after a 21 yard field goal by Justin Watts and then a seven yard touchdown run by Mario Pender.

The Pioneers then added another field goal by Watts, this one from 25 yards out, at the 7:20 minute mark of the second as GSC held a 13-0 lead.

Glenville State's defense then put their stamp on the game as Travon Harrington sacked WVWC's Jarrett Northrop in the Bobcats endzone for Pioneer safety as they now led 15-0 with 1:36 left in the half.

The Pioneers then managed to add one more score before the break as Watts hit his third field goal of the game, this one from 18 yards out, as GSC took an 18-0 lead into halftime.

The Bobcats finally got on the board at the 11:24 minute mark of the third. WVWC drove 40 yards on six plays as Jarrett Northrop hit Chelo Teneval on a four yard touchdown pass making it, 18-7.

GSC then answered back with another Watts field goal. This field goal came at the 6:19 minute mark of the third and came from 25 yards out as the Pioneers took a 21-7 lead.

After a defensive stop by the Pioneers, Glenville State offense then found the endzone for the second time in the afternoon as Timothy Heltzel hit Austin Ratliff on a 46 yard touchdown pitch and catch. GSC took a 28-7 lead 4:19 to play in the third.

On the Bobcats next possession Dominic Cizauskas would come away with an interception and on the return, would pitch it back to Samuel Thomas as he then took it into the endzone for the defensive score as the Pioneers now led WVWC, 35-7 as we headed into the fourth.

The only score in the fourth came from the Pioneers at the 13:46 minute mark as Timothy Heltzel hit Javon Butler on an 80 yard touchdown bomb as GSC went on to claim the 42-7 victory.

GSC racked up 187 yards on the ground while tailing 300 threw the air. WVWC finished with just 63 rushing yards and 112 in the air.

The Pioneers defense recorded four interceptions while they turned it over once with a fumble.

Glenville State went 3-for-4 on fourth down while West Virginia Wesleyan went 1-for-1.

Mario Pender rushed for 107 yards on 13 carriers with a touchdown while De'Angelo Hunt carried the ball seven times for 41 yards.

Timothy Heltzel went 20-for-33 for 301 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Austin Ratliff as he caught nine passes for 139 yards and one TD.

Osai Brown caught four passes for 33 yards while Javon Butler caught three balls for 101 yards and touchdown.

Justin Watts was perfect on the afternoon going 4-for-4 on field goals with his long being 25 yards.

Samuel Thomas led the Pioneer defense with seven tackles and an touchdown while Wil Mayes also racked up seven tackles.

Hardee Pace finished with five tackles and an interception while Dominic Cizauskas also had five tackles and an interception.

Kord Jenkins rushed for 74 yard to lead the Bobcats on the ground.

Jarrett Northrop went 14-for-39 for 112 yards a touchdown and four interceptions.

John Merica had a game-high 12 tackles while Deontre Logan finished with 10 tackles for the Bobcats.

Glenville State (4-3, 3-3 MEC) will hit the road next Saturday, October 26th when they travel to the University of Charleston for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
