Charleston, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers scored the first points of the ball game however that was the only points GSC scored as they fell on the road to the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston Saturday, 42-3.
Glenville State (4-4, 3-4 MEC) tallied 201 yards on 80 plays while the University of Charleston (5-3, 4-3 MEC) totaled 447 yards on 71 total plays.
The Pioneers would strike first at the 10:10 minute mark of the first quarter as
Justin Watts hit a 48-yard field goal, his 18
th of the year, as GSC led 3-0. On the Golden Eagles next possession, they would have a shot at tying it up however Tim McCutchen 43-yard field goal attempt went wide right with.
However, GSC wouldn't be able to take advantage of the missed field goal as they had to punt it away on their next possession. But the Pioneers defense would get the ball back as
Delonte Hood intercepted at 5:41Brant Grisel, his seventh interception of the season and 16
thfor the GSC defense, 5:41 minute mark in the first quarter.
But GSC would not be able to convert the turnover into points as they were forced to punt again.
The Golden Eagles then got on the scoreboard at the 2:22 minute mark as Brant Grisel hit Mike Strachen from 34-yards out as UC took their first lead of the afternoon, 7-3. Glenville State would enter the second quarter trailing UC, 7-3.
The Golden Eagles made separation in the second as they outscored the Pioneers 21-0 in the quarter. UC's second score of the day came at the 12:22 mark on a pick six as Kei Beckham intercepted Tim Heltzel and returned it 39 yards into the endzone as they led, 14-3.
Charleston then added another score at the 9:32 mark when Brant Grisel hit Mike Strachan from four-yards out making it, 21-3. Their final score of the second quarter came at the 1:57 on a three-yard TD run by Joe Street as GSC trailed at the half, 28-3.
The Pioneers tried to get back into the ball game in the second half but the offense would struggle to put points on the board.
Neither team scored in the third quarter as Glenville State headed into the fourth trailing, 28-3.
In the fourth, UC added to their lead outscoring the Pioneers 14-0 as GSC fell on the road, 42-3.
Glenville State finished the day with just nine first downs while UC tallied 18. UC rushed for 79 total yards while GSC finished with 60 rushing yards.
The Pioneers were just 3-for-22 on third downs while the Golden Eagles were 6-of-15.
Timothy Heltzel went 18-for-42 for 141 yards and had threw two interceptions.
Javon Butler hauled in five passes for 60 yards while
Isaac Myers caught four balls for 45 yards.
Heltzel also led the rushing attack for the Pioneers as he rushed for 37 yards on 17 carriers while
Mario Pender carried the ball nine times for 26 yards.
Dominic Cizauska led the GSC defense with eight total tackles while
Samuel Thomas also recorded eight tackles while
Wil Mayes also finished with eight in the game.
UC's Brant Grisel went 23-for-38 for 368 yards four touchdowns and an interception. Â
Mike Strachan caught nine passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns.
Defensively, Kal-El Williams led the Golden Eagles defense with eight total tackles and 2.5 sacks. Kei Beckham finished with two interceptions.
Glenville State (4-4, 3-4 MEC) will return to action next Saturday, November 2nd as they host Wheeling University form Morris Stadium with kick-off slated for 2pm.
