Glenville, W.Va. – After trailing 14-0 at halftime the Glenville State Pioneers scored 24 unanswered points in the second half as they stayed perfect at Morris Stadium with a 24-14 win over the Cardinals of Wheeling University.
Glenville State (5-4, 4-4 MEC) racked up 405 total yards of offense on 70 plays while Wheeling (0-9, 0-8 MEC) tallied just 266 yards of total offense on 67 plays.
The Cardinals would strike first at the 6:47 minute mark as Cam'ron McClain scored on a 27-yard touchdown run putting WU up, 7-0.
The Pioneers offense would struggle in the first quarter as they only tallied one first down in the quarter.
Jump to the 8:11 minute mark of the second quarter and the Pioneer offense would find their selves with a 2
nd and one yard to go on the Cardinals two-yard line. However, GSC would come up without points as
Seth Arnold fumbled at the two. Jermichael Isom recovered the fumble and then raced it 98 yards into the Pioneers endzone as GSC trailed, 14-0.
The Cardinals would take the 14-0 lead into the half.
To start the third quarter, the Pioneers defense would give the offense a lift as
D'Andre Brown would intercept WU's Tucker Strachan. That interception would lead to points for GSC as
Justin Watts hit a 21-yard field goal at the 12:49 mark as the Pioneers trailed, 14-3.
Jump to late in the third and the Pioneers would pull within four as
Jaylen McNair hit
Javon Butler on a five-yard TD pass making it, 14-10 with 4:45 to play in the quarter.
The Pioneers defense then put GSC up 17-14 as
Delonte Hood intercepted Strachan, his eighth interception of the year, taking it 35 yards into the endzone with 3:54 to play in the third. The score would be the sixth defensive TD on the season.
Glenville State then put the game out of reach in the fourth at the 6:54 mark as
Mario Pender scored on a 74 yard run as the Pioneers defeated the Cardinals, 24-14.
The Pioneers rushed for 265 total yards while the GSC defense held WU to just 110 rushing yards.
Mario Pender had a great outing as he totted the ball 19 times for 152 yards and a touchdown. Pender averaged 8.0 yards per rush.
Jaylen McNair went 7-for-13 for 55 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball three times for 85 yards.
Isaac Myers hauled in four catches for 54 yards while
Javon Butler also caught four passes for 31 yards and touchdown.
Defensively,
Dominic Cizauskas led the GSC with 14 total tackles and one pass breakup while
Jansen King finished with seven tackles and an interception.
Delonte Hood also had seven tackles and a pick-six while
Wil Mayes totaled six tackles and a sack.
Wheeling was led by Sy Alli IV has he carried the ball 17 times for 73 yards while Cam'ron McClain totaled 48 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Tucker Strachan went 19-for-5 for 156 yards and three interceptions.
Jake Keenan caught five passes for 56 yards.
The Cardinals defense was led by Brandon Munoz as he totaled 12 tackles along with three sacks.
Glenville State (5-4, 4-4 MEC) will hit the road next Saturday, November 9
th as they travel to Notre Dame College for a 12 p.m. kick-off with the Falcons.
