Huntington, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer basketball team had a nice showing on Tuesday evening despite falling to Division I Marshall University, 100-66.
Glenville State's
Phil Bledsoe had a great outing. The senior forward and Marshall transfer led all scorers with a game-high 22 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds finishing with a double-double.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead over Marshall after a layup from Bledsoe at the 17:43 mark. The Thundering Herd then went on a 7-0 run as they took their first lead of the contest at 9-6 at the 16:48 minute mark.
GSC and MU then went back and fourth trading several baskets as we were knotted up a 13 all with 14:07 to play until halftime.
Marshall then made separation as they went on a 15-5 run and took a 10-point lead, 28-18. GSC's
Phil Bledsoe would end the Herd's run as he connected on a three ball at the 7:39 minute mark making it 28-21.
Down the stretch Marshall outscored Glenville State, 17-14, to end the half as the Pioneers trailed by 10, 45-35.
Glenville State shot 35 percent from the field in the first half but shot just 18 percent from deep. Marshall shot 48 percent from the floor 25 percent from three in the first.
The Thundering Herd came out and started the second half on a 14-5 run as they held a 59-40 lead with 15:08 to play. GSC then made a small 6-2 run capped off by a
Rodney Ray layup at the 14:14 mark as the Pioneers trailed, 61-46.
But again Marshall had an answer as they went on a 17-11 run and took a 78-57 lead with under 8:00 minutes to play.
The Pioneers tried to mount a comeback however Marshall proved to be too much down the stretch as GSC fell on the road, 100-66.
Glenville State finished the contest shooting 30 percent from the field but went just 6-for-43 from deep for 14 percent. Marshall shot 52 percent for the game and shot 23 percent from behind the arc going 6-of-26.
GSC's defense came away with 15 steals and forced MU into 25 turnovers. The Pioneers also had 20 second chance points while the Thundering Herd had 19.
Bledsoe, who paced the Pioneers played 31 minutes, went 10-for-26 from the floor but finished just 2-of-12 from deep. Freshman Steve Verplancken chipped in with 15 points.
Najee Scott scored seven points and had three steals while
Ty Robinson pulled down seven boards and finished with six points.
Marshall was led by Cam Brooks-Harris as he scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Taevion Kinsey scored 14 points and dished out six assists.
Jarrod West finished the contest with 12 points in 25 minutes of action while also grabbing five rebounds.
Glenville State's next exhibition will be on Monday, November 4
th at Division I Davidson College.
