Lady Pioneers Comeback Falls Short at UC

Charleston, W.Va.- Glenville State College Women's Basketball team fell in a tough fought battle against the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston 78-72.  
 
Zakiyah Winfield had a great outing going 12-14 from the field scoring a GSC (3-3, 1-1 MEC) high 28 points with five total rebounds and two steals.
 
In the first quarter, the Lady Pioneers would go back and forth with the Golden Eagles both scoring ten a piece before Re'Shawna Stone scored from behind the arc to take the lead at 13-12 with 3:33 left in the first.
 
Ty Armstrong and Stone added to the scoring to lead 21-20 to end the first.

UC (4-2, 1-1 MEC) started the second by going on a 10-1 run to push their lead to 30-22 with 7:49 left in the half. UC gained a ten-point lead before Emily Stoller was fouled after making a basket form deep to reduce their deficit to four, 38-34.
 
Emily Stoller, Zakiyah Winfield and Ty Armstong would add layups and a three down the stretch to trail 43-41 going into the half.
 
Glenville State shot 46% from the field in the first half but only shot 25% from deep. UC out-rebounded 21-10 while also shooting 59% from the floor going 1-for-1 from behind the arc.
 
The Lady Pioneers came out of the locker room to tie the score 43 all as Winfield would add her 15th point of the game with a jump shot.
 
UC answered back by going on a 7-2 run to push their advantage 50-43 with 4:54 left in the third quarter.
 
The Golden Eagles maintained their lead to end the third 62-52 as Zakiyah Winfield had all 11 points in the third quarter.
 
The Lady Pioneers cut their deficit to single digits as Emily Stoller went 1-for-2 form the line and adding a bucket from deep with a layup from Taychaun Hubbard trailing 69-61 with 4:35 left in the game.
 
Back to back threes by Stoller and a free throw by Hubbard brought the Lady Pioneers back into the game trailing 74-68.
 
The drama would not stop there as the Golden Eagles shot two-for-two at the line with one-minute remaining extending their lead back up to 76-70.
 
The Blue and White's comeback fell short after a 14-point shortfall losing 78-72 in 14 total lead changes.
 
The Lady Pioneers finished the contest shooting just 40% form the field going 6-for-26 from deep with 12 fast break points but only 38 points in the paint.
 
UC shot 50% from the floor going 1-for-2 from deep forcing 20 turnovers with 50 points in the paint.
 
Emily Stoller totaled 18 points on the night with four baskets from deep with two blocks and four rebounds.
 
Re'Shawna Stone followed Stoller scoring 13 points with three assists and three steels.
 
University of Charleston was lead by Anna Hayton with 24 points and 13 rebounds followed by Brooklyn Pannell who totaled 18 points.
 
The Blue and White (3-3, 1-1 MEC) will return to action December 4th as they travel to South Euclid, Ohio to face-off against Notre Dame College (Ohio) at 5:30pm.
