Three-Point Shooting Propels Pioneers Past Falcons

Fairmont, W.Va. – Glenville State defeats Fairmont State (7-2, 4-2 MEC) 125-111 to place the Pioneers first overall in the MEC with a 8-2 overall record and 5-1 in conference.
 
Hegel Augustin set a GSC career high with 35 points shooting 8-for-13 from deep.
 
How It Happened
 
First Half:
 
Steven Verplancken scored the first five points for the Pioneers as the contest would be tied at five all, early in the contest.
 
Hegel August would add to the Pioneer score with bucket from deep along with a basket from the line to keep GSC up 10-7.  Fairmont State responded by going on a 7-0 run to take their first lead 14-10.
 
Augustin and Phil Bledsoe found Verplancken on the court to bank three back to back triples leading the Pioneers 22-14 with 14:15 remaining in the first.
 
The game's momentum would change as FSU regained their lead 26-25 until Verplancken connected with Bledsoe to recover the lead.
 
The lead switched hands several times over a two-minute duration, with threes from Augustin and Bledsoe.
 
Verplancken added a layup to lead 46-41 before the Falcons would tie the contest at 46 all with 2:10 remaining in the half.
 
Hegel Augustin, Noah Frampton and Phil Bledsoe would add three buckets from deep before the half extend their lead up 55-48.
 
Going into the half, GSC shot 42% from the floor shooting 13-for-24 from deep while Hegel Augustin totaled 23 points early in the contest, setting his GSC career high.
 
FSU shot 19-for-43 from the field 38% from deep.
 
Second Half:
 
Fairmont opened the second half with a shot from deep but responded back with another three from Verplancken. FSU continued on a short-4-0 run before Augustin would convert a pair form the line.
 
Ty Robinson used that momentum to score the first Pioneer dunk in the contest tallied by shot from deep from Frampton. GSC would push their advantage to double-digits at 65-55.
 
Both teams would trade baskets back and forth as GSC maintained their ten-point advantage.
 
Bledsoe's bucket from deep would push the Pioneer lead to 16 points, 85-69. The Falcons would respond by going on a short 5-0 run before Augustin converted 2-for-3 from the strip.
 
Ty Robinson would score the century basket off a rebound from Bledsoe, leading 100-86 with 7:23 remaining in the game.
 
Both teams would trade 15 baskets a piece as Seth Fallon added a pair form the stripe, maintaining their 15-point lead at 121-106 with under a minute remaining  
 
Inside The Box Score
 
The Pioneers shot 50% from the floor with 51% from deep. GSC notched 29 fast break points, with 19 points in the paint while also totaling seven team blocks.
 
Phil Bledsoe scored 31 total points with 11 rebounds shooting 9-for-10 from the line and 6-for-11 from deep.
 
Steven Verplacnken hit a double-double scoring 19 total points with 11 assists.
 
Fairmont shot 43-for-89 from the field shooting just 33% from deep shooting 64 points in the paint.
 
FSU was lead by Dale Bonner who notched 33 points, seven rebounds and six assists
