Lady Pioneers Comeback Falls Short at FSU

Fairmont, W.Va. – Missed baskets by GSC would bite the Lady Pioneers in a loss to Fairmont State (6-5, 4-2 MEC) 101-87. The Blue and White fall to 6-4 on the year and 4-2 in conference.
 
Re'Shawna Stone had a great showing, posting a double-double with 22 total points and ten rebounds.
 
How It Happened
 
First Quarter:
 
Fairmont State jumped to an early 11-6 lead, as Victoria Brown and Taychaun Hubbard connected with back to back layups.
 
The Blue and White continued to trail in the first 17-12 with under two minutes remaining.  Brown would go 1-for-2 at the stripe, followed by a two layups by Mashayla Cecil and Zakiyah Winfield to tie the contest at 19 all.
 
The first quarter would end tied at 21 all.
 
Second Quarter:
 
The Fighting Falcons opened the second quarter with jumper and free throw to take the lead, however Taychaun Hubbard connected from deep followed by a jump shot from Re'Shawna Stone to put GSC up 28-26.
 
Cecil and Stone gave the Lady Pioneers a slight advantage with two three-point plays to lead 38-35 with 3:14 remaining in the half.
 
FSU outscored GSC in under three minutes 12-8 as Kaylee Pierce added to the Lady Pioneer score with another shot from deep. The Lady Pioneers trail 47-46 in the half.
 
GSC shot 41% from the floor with just 4-for-14 from deep while scoring 11 points off turnovers.
 
Fairmont State shot 52% from the field and also 28% from behind the arc while scoring 16 fast break points.
 
Third Quarter:
 
After a 9-2 run by Fairmont State to start the half, Winfield added a jumper followed by a Stone basket form the stripe.
 
FSU pushed their lead to double-digits at 63-51 before Abby Stoller and Winfield responded with a jumper and layup. The Falcons continued to maintain control prior to Emily Stoller's basket from deep and a pair form the strip by Winfield to put the Lady Pioneers within single digits.  
 
Stone converted a pair form the line followed by a Pierce layup and three from Emily Stoller reduced the GSC deficit to five, 75-70 at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter:
 
Winfield and Emily Stoller's buckets put the Lady Pioneers down by one early in the fourth, FSU answered back layup and jumper to push their advantage back to three.
 
FSU would pull away with a 13-2 run to push the Falcon lead back to double-digits.
 
Winfield would add a pair form the stripe as both teams traded baskets at five a piece. GSC would fall 101-87 in the contest
 
Inside the Box Score
 
GSC shot 37% from the floor and just 6-for-31 from deep. The Lady Pioneers scored 17 bench points with 20 fast break points and 46 points in the paint.
 
Zakiyah Winfield continued to show her dominance leading the Lady Pioneers with 27 points and three rebounds.
 
Taychaun Hubbard scored 11 points for the Blue and White shooting 4-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line.
 
Fairmont State 52% from the field and 37% from behind the arc while also gaining 26 fast break points, and 60 points in the paint.
 
The Falcons were lead by Rachel Laskody who scored 37 total points with 15 rebounds and four assists.
