Wheeling, W.Va. – The Glenville State men's basketball team fell on the road Wednesday night to the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals, 100-72.
Glenville State (10-15, 5-14) shot just 37 percent from the field and 28 percent from three going 9-of-32. Wheeling Jesuit (7-18, 6-13) shot lights out as they finished the night shooting 54 percent from the field and 42 percent from deep going 12-of-28.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early six point lead over the Cardinals at 9-3 at the 17:05 minute mark. But WJU made a quick 7-0 run as they took a 10-9 lead at the 15:22 minute mark.
The Cardinals then made some separation after an 11-11 tie. Wheeling Jesuit went onto outscore the Pioneers 13-3 as they built a 10 point lead with 11:16 to play until halftime, 24-14. The Cardinals ended the first half outscoring GSC, 29-16 as the Pioneers trailed at halftime by 23 points, 53-30.
The Pioneers started the second half on a 24-14 run as they cut the Cardinals lead to 14, 67-53 with 11:51 on the clock. However, that's as close as the Pioneers would get as the hot shooting proved to be too much. The Cardinals outscored the Glenville State 47-42 in the second half as the Pioneers fell, 100-72.
The game had two ties and four lead changes all coming in the first half of action.
Glenville State's largest lead of the game came in the first half when they led by six. Wheeling Jesuit's largest lead of the game was by 30 which came in the second.
The Pioneers had 13 costly turnovers on the night while also losing the rebounding battle by two, 37-35.
Phil Bledsoe paced the Pioneers with 17 points on 5-of-14 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. Jamal Pollydore chipped in with 14 points and three assists while Howard Smith scored 12 points off the bench for the Pioneers.
Elisha Mayberry and Noah Frampton each chipped in with nine points apiece on the night.
Wheeling Jesuit was led by DeAndre Robinson as he scored a game-high 26 points. Steve Cannady chipped in with 20 points to go with five assists and six rebounds. Franck Kamgain finished with 17 points on the night.
Glenville State (10-15, 5-14) will now host the West Liberty University Hilltoppers this Saturday, February 23rd at 4 p.m. from inside the Waco Center.
