Wheeling, W.Va. – The No. 21/17 Glenville State Lady Pioneers used a 22-4 run in the second quarter as they claimed their 13th straight win on the road Wednesday night defeating the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit University by 25 points, 91-66
Glenville State (23-2, 18-1) forced Wheeling Jesuit (4-21, 2-17) into 24 turnovers and converted them into 28 points on the way to the victory.
After miserable shooting in the first quarter by the Lady Pioneers, GSC still managed to take a two point lead after one, 17-15. The first quarter saw the Lady Pioneers force the Cardinals into nine turnovers but GSC shot 26 percent from the floor and just nine percent from deep.
Wheeling Jesuit scored the first four point of the second quarter as they took a two point lead, 19-17 with 9:12 to play. WJU's first lead since they lead 2-0 to start the contest. However, Glenville State found their groove as they went on a 12-0 run starting at 5:40 minute mark which saw them build an 11 point lead, 35-24 with 3:33 until halftime.
Glenville State then outscored Wheeling Jesuit 10-4 to end the half as the Lady Pioneers took a 15 point lead into intermission. Zakiyah Winfield paced GSC in the first half as she scored 14 points.
In the third and fourth quarters it would be all GSC. The Lady Pioneers outscored the Cardinals 27-21 in the third and 19-15 in the fourth as they claimed the 25 point win.
The contest had five ties and six lead changes all coming in the first half.
After a slow start shooting Glenville State finished the night shooting 41 percent from the field and 21 percent from deep. Wheeling Jesuit shot 38 percent from the floor and 20 percent from deep.
GSC won the rebounding battle 47-39 while pulling down 22 offensive boards.
The Lady Pioneers scored 44 of their 91 points in the paint to go along with 18 fast break points, and 20 second chance points.
Emily Stoller led the Lady Pioneers with 20 points. Zakiyah Winfield scored a career-high 18 points in the contest with 14 coming in the first half. Zakiyah also grabbed six rebounds in the victory.
Re'Shawna Stone chipped in with 18 points as well. She also pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists. Courtney Davis finished the night with eight points and eight boards.
Wheeling Jesuit was led by Chenelle Moore as she scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Glenville State (23-2, 18-1) will return to action this Saturday, February 23rd as they host the Hilltoppers of West Liberty University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. from inside the Waco Center.Â
