Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers won the 2018-19 MEC Regular Season Championship on Saturday as they defeated the Hilltoppers of West Liberty University, 112-99. It's the third consecutive MEC Regular Season Title for the Lady Pioneers.
Glenville State (24-2, 19-1) forced West Liberty (18-8, 15-5) into 27 turnovers and converted them into 36 points on the way to their 37
th straight win at home.
After a stellar first half by the Lady Pioneers, GSC took a 25 point lead into halftime, 62-37. Glenville State shot 61 percent from the floor in the first half and 41 percent from deep as they went 5-of-12. West Liberty shot 42 percent from the field however they went just 3-of-14 from deep for 21 percent in the first.
In the third quarter, West Liberty made a run as they outscored GSC 30-15 in the quarter as they cut the Lady Pioneers lead to 10, 77-67.
West Liberty started the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run as they pulled within three, 80-77 with 6:39 left to play. However, GSC answered back with a 12-8 run of their own as they went back up by seven, 92-85, which was capped off by a
Maya Horne three-point play with 4:54 to play.
But a big three on the Hilltoppers next possession cut it back to four, 92-88 with 4:30 left. However, the Lady Pioneers proved to be too much as they then outscored West Liberty in the 4:00 minute of play 17-8 as they went on to win by 13, 112-99.
The contest had one tie and just two lead changes. GSC's largest lead of the game was by 29 which was in the second quarter. West Liberty's largest lead of the game came in the first quarter by two.
Glenville State finished the day shooting 51 percent from the field and 34 percent from deep as they went 9-of-26. West Liberty also shot 51 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the arc as they went 15-of-34.
Glenville State outscored West Liberty in the paint 66-47 while also outscoring them in fast break points 26-13.
The Lady Pioneers balanced offensive attack was led by Re'Shawna Stone as she scored 24 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.
Emily Stoller, who knocked down three three-pointers, finished with 18 points.
Zakiyah Winfield and
Ty Armstrong each added 17 points in the game while
Blaize Burgess chipped in with 12 points.
Courtney Davis grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with five points.
West Liberty was led by Marissa Brown as she posted a double-double scoring 29 points and 11 rebounds. Morgan Brunner finished with 26 points while Brandi Beader chipped in with 18 points.
Glenville State (24-2, 19-1) will hit the road on Wednesday, February 27
th as they travel to Shepherd University for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Rams. Â
