Armstrong’s 32 Leads Lady Pioneers Past Yellow Jackets

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer basketball team used a huge second half scoring 68 points as they went on to win their 34th straight home victory defeating the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets by 16, 112-96.

Glenville State (19-2, 14-1) had five players score in double figures while Ty Armstrong posted a career-high 32 points. West Virginia State (4-17, 3-12) had four players' post double figures with Charity Shears leading the way with 18 points.

The first quarter saw GSC jump out to an early seven point lead, 19-12, with 5:19 left to play in the quarter. However West Virginia State went on a 7-0 run as they knotted the contest up at 19-19 with 3:14 to play.

The Yellow Jackets went on to take a two point lead at the end of the first quarter, 26-24.

After a back and forth second quarter neither team would hold more than a four point lead. The Lady Pioneers won the quarter outscoring WVSU by five points, 20-15, as GSC took a three-point lead at halftime, 44-41.

Glenville State came out in the third and made some separation as they outscored the Yellow Jackets 20-6 to start the quarter as they took a commanding 17 point lead, 64-47 at the 4:07 minute mark.

GSC eventually went on to win the third quarter outscoring WVSU, 30-21, as they took a 74-62 lead heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, it was all GSC as they kept the fast pace up and outscored the Yellow Jackets by four in the quarter, 38-34; as they went on to claim the 16 point victory, 112-96.

There were eight lead changes and four ties on the night.

Glenville State finished the night shooting 46 percent from the field and 37 percent from deep while West Virginia State shot 39 percent from the floor and 26 percent from deep.

The Lady Pioneers had 27 assists on the night as a team. However, GSC turned the ball over 23 times and allowed the Yellow Jackets to score 27 points off of them.

Glenville State won the rebounding battle by 12, 59-47.

Ty Armstrong had a fabulous night as she poured in a career-high 32 points. Armstrong went 12-for-29 from the floor and 7-of-20 from deep. She also grabbed six rebounds and was one of two players to have four assists.

Re'Shawna Stone scored 24 points in the win to go with six rebounds. Donasja Scott chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds while Blaize Burgess also posted 11 points on the night.

Zakiyah Winfield scored 10 points with Courtney Davis grabbing a team-high nine rebounds and Abby Stoller posted a team-high five assists.

West Virginia State was led Charity Shears as she scored 18 points while Lyrin Hatcher posted a double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Glenville State (19-2, 14-1) will travel to the University of Charleston this Saturday, February 9th for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Golden Eagles.
