Pioneers Sweep Season Series Against WVSU

Institute, W.Va. – Glenville State claimed their second win over West Virginia State University (12-4, 7-4 MEC) 107-97 improving to 10-7 on the year and 7-4 in conference action.
 
Tyvon Taylor paced 23 minutes tallying 22 points shooting 5-for-5 from the stripe and 8-for-13 from the field.
 
How It Happened
 
First Half:
 
Hegel Augustin opened the contest for the Blue and White with a bucket from deep with a layup from Steven Verplancken as Phil Bledsoe went 1-for-2 at the stripe to lead 6-0 early.
 
The Pioneers held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of play before WVSU shot a jumper and mimicked Bledsoe at the stripe going 1-for-2.
 
Seth Fallon and Augustin continued to add to the Blue and White score with a two buckets from deep to gain a ten-point lead over the Yellow Jackets 16-5. Ty Robinson would hush the Yellow Jacket fans with two dunks back to back.
 
The Yellow Jackets cut their deficit to 26-29 as WVSU sparked a 16-9 run. The Yellow Jackets would tie the contest at 31 all with a layup and basket from deep.
 
The lead would trade hands over three minutes.
 
With one-minute remaining, Najee Scott would add triple to the Pioneer score followed by a layup from Tyvon Taylor. Taylor would add another three points with layup and freebie from the stripe to lead 49-44 at the half.
 
At the half, the Pioneers shot 50% from the floor and 7-for-21 from deep as the Yellow Jackets shot just 37% from the field and 38% from behind the arc.
 
Second Half:
 
Bledsoe, Frampton and Augustin opened the second half on a 7-0 run to lead 56-44, Steven Verplancken added to the score from deep but responded with a pair of freebies from the Yellow Jackets.
 
The Pioneers continued to maintain a seven-point lead until the 12-minute mark where the Yellow Jackets pushed a 7-0 run to cut their deficit to 69-71.
 
The Yellow Jackets would press the Pioneer defense within one point before the Blue and White responded on a 6-0 run to lead 82-75 with under 10 minutes remaining.
 
The Pioneers would regain a ten-point lead but WVSU's offensive would not stop as they would add a pair of freebies and a bucket from deep.
 
The Pioneers would regain their momentum gaining a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining in the half. WVSU added a pair of freebies and a layup to reduce their deficit 94-89. The Pioneers mimicked the Yellow Jackets as Ty Robinson's layup and freebies from Tyvon Taylor extended their lead back to 98-89.
 
Taylor hit the century mark with a pair of freebies but responded with a triple from WVSU.
 
The Pioneers would defeat the Yellow Jackets 107-97.

The Pioneers shot 51% from the floor and 13-for-38 form deep scoring 37 bench points.
 
Hegel Augustin had a game high 24 points with five rebounds and three assists.
 
Phil Bledsoe notched a double-double with 23 total points and 12 rebounds on the night.
 
Najee Scott and Ty Robinson notched nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
 
The Yellow Jackets shot 42% from the field and 34% from behind the arc with 19 points off turnovers.
 
WVSU was lead by Jeremiah Moore notching 27 total points and six rebounds.
