Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State defeated Concord University (5-12, 3-9 MEC) in an end of week conference matchup 89-74. The Pioneers would tally 19 baskets from deep to improve the Blue and White to 11-7 overall and 8-4 within the MEC.
Phil Bledsoe would tally 24 total points and ten rebounds on his way to his tenth double-double this season and 27
th career.
How It Happened
First Half:
The Pioneers came out of the gate with an early 10-6 lead over the Mountain Lions with triples from
Seth Fallon and
Hegel Augustin.
Out of the first media timeout,
Steven Verplancken and
Noah Frampton both knocked down a triple to push their lead 23-17.
The Pioneers would push to a double-digit lead as
Phil Bledsoe,
Najee Scott and
Hegel Augustin all knocked down buckets from behind the arc, pushing GSC up 35-19.
GSC would make separation before the half 49-26 before Concord would respond on a 9-0 run to reduce their deficit 49-35.
The Pioneers shot 41% from the floor and 12-for-26 from deep where the Mountain Lions shot 14-for-36 from the field and 33% from behind the arc.
Second Half:
Both teams struggled to find the net in the first two minutes of play before Concord would hit a three but Bledsoe would respond by converting a pair from the stripe.
GSC would extend their lead back out of the media timeout as Bledsoe would knock a triple followed by a dunk from
Ty Robinson.
Extending their lead to 20, Concord would answer back on a 11-5 run to push within eleven of the Pioneers. GSC would repspond back on a 14-8 run as Bledsoe and
Tyvon Taylor knocked down a triple.
Augustin would add to the Pioneer score with a bucket from deep with under five minutes remaining in the contest.
With under two minutes remaining,
Steven Verplancken would convert a pair of freebies as Bledsoe would add to the Blue and White advantage shooting 1-for-2 at the line.
Bledsoe would add layup but Concord would respond by knocking down a triple and dunk.
Concord came up shot in the contest as GSC would win 89-74.
Inside the Box Score
The Pioneers shot 43% from the field and 44% from behind the arc knotting 14 points off turnovers and 13 second chance points.
Steven Verplancken totaled 21 points on the night shooting 8-for-13 from the floor and 50% from deep.
Hegel Augustin was just shy of a double-double knotting 18 points and seven rebounds in the game.
Tyvon Taylor connected with the Pioneers on the floor gaining six assists.
The Mountain Lions mimicked the Pioneers also shooting 44% from the floor but just 6-for-19 from deep while scoring 38 bench points and 45 points in the paint.
CU was lead by Malik Johnson who totaled 15 points and seven rebounds with three assists.
