GSC Hoops Snaps Past Urbana in OT Victory

Urbana, OH – In a back and forth contest between Glenville State and Urbana University (4-15, 3-10 MEC), the Pioneers forced the Blue Knights into overtime tied at 70 all. GSC would come out on top by going on a 13-3 run defeating UU 83-73.
 
The Pioneers continue to a four game win streak improving to 12-7 on the year and 9-4 in conference action.
 
Steven Verplancken net eight points in the final three minutes of overtime, tallying 22 points in the ontest while shooting 57% from deep with seven rebounds.
 
Ty Robinson collected his first career double-double scoring 14 points and bringing down 13 rebounds with two blocks on the night.
 
How It Happened
 
First Half:
 
Najee Scott would connect with Steven Verplancken from deep for the opening shot of the contest, but the Blue Knights would respond by gaining an early 5-3 lead.
 
Verplancken then tied the contest at five all with a layup before going on a short 7-0 run to regain the lead at 12-5.
 
To close the gap, the Pioneers went on a short 6-0 run to reduce their deficit to one, but rather UU would sink a three to refuse the close score.
 
Tyvon Taylor would hit a triple to close the gap as Najee Scott would add another three to push the Pioneers ahead 19-18 before the media time-out.
 
Out of the timeout, the Blue Knights went on an 11-0 run to sway past the Pioneers in double-digits. Taylor would slow their momentum down by sinking a three from deep pull within seven.
 
Taylor then continued with their momentum entering a 7-2 run with buckets by Phil Bledsoe and Steven Verplancken to trail 26-31.
 
With under two minutes remaining, Hegel Augustin would add a three-point conversion as Verplancken would sink a three. UU would not give up as they would also respond with a shot from behind the arc.
 
Ty Robinson would add a layup to the Pioneer score as they trail by two, 36-34 at the half.
 
GSC shot 46% from the field at the half while knotting just 5-for-13 from behind the arc where UU shot 48% from the floor and 6-for-9 from deep.
 
Second Half:
 
Augustin opened the second half on a 5-0 run gaining a 39-36 lead but UU returned within one-point lead.  
 
Both teams would trade baskets until Seth Fallon connected with Verplancken from deep to recover their lead. The Pioneers would then push a short 7-2 run to extend back to 51-44.
 
The Blue Knights responded on a 6-0 run to pull within one of the Pioneers, UU then surpassed GSC at 58-54.
 
Augustin's layup cut their deficit back to one, both teams would trade jumpers as the Pioneer's continued to trail by one.
 
Tyvon Taylor would net a technical to tie the contest at 66 then surpassed with another freebie from the strip leading 67-66. Urbana then added layup to their score as Ty Robinson mimicked with a Pioneer layup.
 
With under 30 second remaining, UU converted a pair of freebies to retake the lead at 70-69 but Robinson would respond by shooting 1-for-1 at the line sending both teams into overtime.
 
Over Time:
 
The first minute and a half would remain scoreless for both teams, Verplancken would break the barrier by hitting a three pointer followed by a layup, and bucket at the stripe from Robinson to lead 76-70.
 
UU continued as they would knock a triple to pull within three with two minutes remaining.
 
Verplancken would sink a bucket from behind the arc and jumper finding Augustin on the floor for both shots to extend their lead to 81-73.
 
Noah Frampton net the final shot to defeat the Blue Knights 83-73.
 
Inside The Box Score
 
The Pioneers shot 42% from the floor and just 11-for-35 from behind the arc, while netting 17 fast break points, 19 points off turnovers and 34 points in the paint.
 
Hegel Augustin tallied a double-double on the night with 17 points and 11 rebounds while connecting for four assists.
 
Tyvon Taylor shot 4-for-4 from the stripe totaling 12 points on the night and five rebounds.
 
Urbana University shot 39% from the floor and 10-for-22 from deep grabbing five steals and ten-points off turnovers. The Blue Knights were lead by Shaunn Monroe who also totaled 22 points.
 
Coming Up
 
The Pioneers will return Home in the Waco Center hosting Notre Dame College in GSC's Winter Homecoming. Tip off is slated for 4pm on February 1st.
