Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers opened up 2020 with a 29 point home victory over the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University Friday afternoon, 101-72.
Emily Stoller lead the Lady Pioneers (8-4) pouring in a game-high 22 points hitting six three-pointers in the win.
How It Happened
First Quarter:
Glenville State jumped out to a fast 9-2 lead over the Golden Bulls capped off by a lay-up by
Zakiyah Winfield.
Re'Shawna Stone's lay-up helped GSC build an eight point lead with 6:46 to play in the quarter, 14-6. However, Johnson C. Smith (5-7) made a small run as the cut the Lady Pioneers lead to just four points with 57 second left, 23-19.
But GSC would end the quarter on a
Mashayla Cecil three-pointer and then a lay-up by
Taychaun Hubbard as they went up nine at the end of one, 28-19.
Second Quarter:
Glenville State started the quarter on a 12-6 run as they built a 13 point lead 40-27 with just under six minutes until the half.
Then the Golden Bulls went on a 10-2 run as they pulled within five, 42-37, with 1:54 left in the half.
A three-pointer by
Ty Armstrong would end the half as GSC took an eight point lead into the break.
Glenville State shot 43 percent from the field and 37 percent from deep while Johnson C. Smith shot 38 percent from the floor and 30 percent from behind the arc.
Third Quarter:
The third quarter would be very much a back and forth affair as each team scored 15 points apiece in the third as GSC still held an eight point lead heading into the fourth, 64-56.
Fourth Quarter:
Glenville State would make separation in the fourth. The Lady Pioneers started the quarter on a 16-6 run and never looked back as they held an 80-62 lead with 7:06 to play.
Eventually GSC went on to outscore the Golden Eagles 37-16 in the fourth as they went on to win 101-72.
Inside the Box Score
The Blue and White shot ended the contest shooting 43 percent from the field and 37 percent from deep.
The Lady Pioneers forced the Golden Bulls into 29 turnovers and converted them into 25 points. GSC also scored 21 second chance points while they also scored 20 fast break points.
Emily Stoller led all scorers 22 points while Re'Shawna Stone chipped in with 21 points.
Zakiyah Winfield scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Ty Armstrong and
Taychaun Hubbard both scored 13 points each. Huabbard also pulled down six rebounds.
Johnson C. Smith shot 38 percent from the field and 30 percent form deep for the contest. Le'Zarea Sowell led the Golden Bulls with 19 points and 11 rebounds posting a double-double. Aubrianna Bonner also posted a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
