Glenville, W.Va. – Glenville State defeated the Cardinals of Wheeling University 125-81 in the first conference matchup of the new decade.
Re'Shawna Stone lead the Lady Pioneers with 22 total points and eight rebounds while pacing 18 mins.
How It Happened
First Quarter:
The Lady Pioneers opened the contest on a 12-6 run with threes by
Emily Stoller and
Ty Armstrong. The Blue and White momentum continued as
Mashayla Cecil connected with
Zakiyah Winfield to maintain a 14-8 lead with 5:13 remaining in the quarter.
Taychaun Hubbard would add the to GSC score with a shot from behind the arc followed by jumper by
Emily Stoller.
The Blue and White finished the quarter on a 13-4 run, leading 32-18.
Second Quarter:
Winfield opened the quarter from deep with
Kaneshia Afi who would go 2-for-2 at the stripe. The Cardinals would score two shots to slow the Lady Pioneers down but Re'Shawna Stone and Armstrong scored on a jumper and layup to put the Lady Pioneers 41-22.
Lucille Westfall would then find Winfield on the floor to bank a bucket from deep. Armstrong would follow, connecting with
Kaylee Pierce.
The Lady Pioneers would make separation ending the half on an 18-7 run to send the Cardinals to the locker room trailing 67-33.
GSC shot 45% from the floor and 32% from deep, where WU shot 13-for-30 from the field and 0% from behind the arc.
Third Quarter:
WU started the half scoring their first triple of the contest as Westfall would quickly answer back with a shot from deep.
Both teams would trade 15 baskets a piece with buckets by Winfield, Armstrong and Stone.
Cecil and Pierce both knocked down a triple each along with a pair of freebies by
Emily Stoller to push the Lady Pioneer advantage to 40 points.
Mashayla Cecil would hit a buzzer from downtown to send the Lady Pioneers into the final stanza with a 99-55 advantage.
Fourth Quarter:
Winfield hit the century mark for the Lady Pioneers connecting with Westfall on a layup.
The Cardinals went on a short 10-6 run to reduce their deficit but stopped by a layup from Stone.
Makayla Pierce would knock down back to back triples to extend the Blue and White advantage to 123-79.
Westfall added a jumper late to give the Lady Pioneers a double-digit victory.

Zakiyah Winfield tallied 20 points going 8-for-10 from the floor, with Ty Armstong following behind with 18 points and game high five steals.
Taychuan Hubbard added nine rebounds for the Blue and White accumulating 10 points.
